In my opinion we should celebrate doggo’s every day but as today is International Dog Day I absolutely must shout out to 2 my office buddies!

Of course my goodest girl Lola & my beautiful little fur grand baby Winnie who spends a lot of time with us too!

I often have to share my breakfast and lunch with them, they follow me to the loo and they sleep on the job but they also get me up from my desk for stretches and are the best company ever!!

Life is always better with a dog (or 2!) so please say hi to your dog from me & Happy International Dog Day!

Welcome home Robyn & Kaye!! 🤗

After almost a month of travelling through South America on Cosmos’ “Ultimate South America & Galapagos cruise” tour they’re back to reality with memories to last a lifetime!

In Robyn’s words,

“I’m not very good at doing my homework so almost everything was a magnificent surprise!

Iguassu Falls should be on everyone’s bucket list as with Peru and the Galápagos Islands. Kaye & I are both glad we didn’t wait till we were much older to do the trip because it was pretty full on but SO worth it.

Thanks once more Donna for your efforts in organising the whole thing for us, certainly one of the highlights of my life!”

I think South America just moved up a few notches on my bucket list!!

On Friday we made our way from Somerset West towards the city centre of Cape Town where we spent the last 3 nights of our tour.

Driving away from the obviously wealthy vineyard region and along the highway we were saddened to see so many rows of informal settlements. Miles & miles of shanty shacks made from whatever scraps could be found housing almost 80,000 people and yet as you enter the city limits of Cape Town there are shiny high rises, new apartment buildings with Ferrari and Mercedes show rooms below, high end shopping centres, restaurant precincts and fancy hotels.
The alarmingly diverse contrast and economic disparity can’t be ignored, not just here but all over South Africa and it’s sad to say it’s unlikely to change anytime soon 😓

In our 3 days here we explored the city centre & waterfront (which reminds me so much of Tassie!) we went up to see Table mountain and the lookout across to the Pacific.

We visited Shimansky to learn about the history of mining renowned South African diamonds including the Cullinan, the largest in the world and spent time at the Desmond Tutu museum, another sobering place where we learned more about another activist who’s thoughts and views were well before his time.

We drove along the coastal Champans Peak with hairpin turns & incredible views all way to The Cape of Good Hope, the most south western point on the African continent & saw African Penguins at Boulders Beach. 🐧

We were welcomed once more to a locals home for another a delicious & informative dinner and ended our tour with a fantastic authentic & immersive African experience including a 14 course meal, traditional entertainment and drumming & dancing! 🪘

And so our time in Africa comes to an end as we make our way to the airport for the long journey home. We’ve had so many wonderful experiences but it was absolutely the people I shared this with that made it even better than I could ever have imagined! 😘

Until next time, Africa I’ll be back! 🙌

Yesterday offered a very different backdrop to what we’ve been used to and you’ll see there was clearly a very obvious theme! ☺️

Staying in the very scenic Somerset West meant we were right in the heart of the famous western cape wine region so our day was spent wine tasting and exploring the quaint countryside towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

Both towns are some of the oldest in South Africa dating back to the 1600’s and because of being founded and established by the Dutch & French they have a very European feel about them.

After very long and busy days of safaris and wilderness everyone loved the very relaxed pace of wandering through the galleries, cafes & boutiques but most of all learning about (and drinking!) some of South Africa’s finest 🥂🍇🍷

After checking out of our beautiful Victoria Falls accommodation we made our way to the village chiefs home to learn about the local culture, customs, beliefs and traditions. Although they live very primitively in the regional villages they are happy & content and could teach westerners a lot about respect, resilience and unity.

Then after a quick stop at Victoria Falls gorge we started the drive to Botswana 🇧🇼

Crossing the border was a quick and easy process and before we knew it we had arrived at our new lodge by lunch time.

In the late afternoon we boarded a boat for a river cruise along the Chobe. Having done one on the Zambezi the night before we were expecting they would be quite similar but we could not have been more wrong!

The Chobe is a much wider river with a completely different landscape. It has arms going in different directions and an island at the junction that provides plenty of food to the wildlife even during the dry season.

The wildlife here was so much more abundant with huge herds of elephants of 20 or more at a time, buffalo in droves, crocs around every bend and hippos a plenty!! 🦛

3 hours flew by and we ended the experience with another spectacular African sunset. 🌅

We’re off for our first morning game drive this morning so it’s up and out very early (it’s 5:30am here now! ) The fact that we’ve seen so many animals in the past few days and not actually been on a safari yet is mind boggling so we’re all very excited for what today will bring!! 🦁🤞🏻🐯

Our second day in Zimbabwe was another special one.

We started our day visiting the
Victoria falls wildlife trust, a not for profit that began in 2008 to do the vital work of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
They care for injured and orphaned animals, from small birds to elephants and everything in between with the main goal to release them back to their natural habitat when they are ready.
They collaborate with the locals to educate them on protecting their crops while keeping animals safe and offer education programs for school children to instill long term cultural changes. 🙌

Their scientists perform a number of incredible tests to help in the conviction of poachers, returning displaced animals & combating disease using wildlife forensics & DNA
Histopathology,
Toxicology & Genetics to name a few! The technology they are using is seriously impressive and the work they are doing is truly admirable! 👏🏻

We then visited Wild Horizon elephant sanctuary. A property in the national park currently boasting 17 elephants living freely & safely across their 84000 acres. Being up close and personal with a few of them was a very special experience! 🐘

Then it was on to lunch at a locals home for a traditional meal including polenta, beef stew, black eyed peas and a few other tasty dishes. Margaret opened her home proudly to us and answered all of our questions about her life, learning that 8 people live in their small home without electricity, heating or hot water, just another humbling reminder of how fortunate we are. 😌

We thought our day was complete when we had an unexpected surprise of seeing a herd of giraffe wandering along the road near or lodge but then ended our day on a sunset river cruise along the Zambezi River where we spotted crocodile & elephants on the banks and a number of huge hippos swimming along! This trip just keeps getting better!! 🇿🇼

Crossing the border into Botswana today and very much looking forward to what comes next!! 🇧🇼

Yesterday morning we boarded a small plane for the 2 hour flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls.

After checking in to our beautiful lodge (more about that later!) and being fed what they said was a “light lunch” we headed for the falls.

Like me, this destination is on the bucket list of so many but nothing can prepare you for the absolute magnitude and magnificence! The sheer size and power of Victoria Falls, known as the "Smoke That Thunders," evokes a sense of wonder and awe that is indescribable!

An almost 3km walk along the well paved path means you get to see the falls from a number of different vantage points and every one is different. Just when you think you’ve seen the best there possibly could be you round the bend to another breathtaking view!

In parts there is no spray and in others it was like we were walking in the rain! One particular spot was so heavy it felt like a thick fog had rolled in and you couldn’t see the falls for the mist!

The end of the walk is at the bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia over the Zambezi River a beautiful structure that was built in 1904 and was part of the original Cape to Cairo rail project.

Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world and one of the natural wonders inspires such a range of emotions, from awe and wonder at its sheer power and beauty to joy and exhilaration and we all felt all of that yesterday afternoon.

A day we will never forget!!

After a year of planning, excitement & anticipation the day finally came for our Collette tours “ Ultimate South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana “ hosted group tour to depart! 🙌

On Monday we boarded the very long flight via Sydney to Johannesburg and after a late arrival and a good night’s sleep, yesterday we hit the ground running to explore the city and surrounds.

South Africa has had a very sad & complex history and our guide Tshepo did an incredible job of telling its story from prehistory, colonization, apartheid, and the eventual transition to a multi-racial democracy.

After an orientation drive around the city we visited Constitutional Hill, including the old fort prison where Ghandi & Mandela were both once imprisoned and heard about the atrocious treatment and conditions the prisoners endured.

We then crossed Nelson Mandela bridge to make our way towards Soweto an area of Johannesburg where in the 1930’s the government moved people of color out to their own settlements to implement further segregation. It’s a diverse area, some well built albeit small homes to shanty towns, some vibrant and thriving areas and some in immense poverty.

After a delicious, local lunch we visited Mandela House, where Nelson and his family lived for many years prior to his imprisonment in 1962 and again for some time after his release in 1990.

We learned about the Soweto uprising at the Hector Pieterson museum and ended our afternoon with a walk through one of the many informal settlements, a very humbling experience.

It’s one thing to hear about this countries history on TV or read about it in the newspaper, but another to see the devastation that racism, hate and bigotry has inflicted upon its people in our lifetime firsthand.

An emotional and impactful day, one the whole group agreed was very worthwhile.

And now this morning we take a flight to Zimbabwe and this afternoon we visit the magnificent Victoria Falls, excited is an understatement!!

Girls have well & truly dominated the family tree on my mother’s side and today, International women’s day 2025, is the perfect day to reflect on how blessed I am to have had so many incredible women around me all my life.

My Nan & my mum, my aunts, sisters, cousins, my daughter & nieces, 4 generations of strong, resilient, loving & independent women who make my life shine a whole lot brighter 💫

Our nation & the world has so much work to do in standing for Rights, Equality, & Empowerment For ALL Women and Girls but our voice is getting louder and although there’s a long way to go we need to celebrate the progress that women have made and continue to make.

So here’s to strong women, may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. 💕
