🌿✨ Explore the Tranquillity of Young’s Creek Reservoir Walk ✨🌿

Looking for a walk that blends nature, history, and local heritage? The Young’s Creek Reservoir Walk is a 4.6 km return trail (around 2 hours) that begins just west of the picnic area.

🌳 Along the Track You’ll See:
• Towering eucalypt forest and shaded pockets of temperate rainforest.
• The historic Young’s Creek Reservoir, built in 1918 to supply water to Orbost. The impressive 7.8m wall still stands today, holding stories of the past.
• A viewing platform offering stunning views of the reservoir wall and peaceful surrounds.

📜 History of the Site:
The Young’s Creek picnic area sits on the former site of a sawmill, owned by L.E. & H. Williams in the early 1920s. While the mill was later dismantled and moved to Cabbage Tree Creek, sharp eyes can still spot old sawmill debris. At the car park, you’ll also find the remains of a portable steam engine, built in Leiston, Suffolk, England—once the mill’s power plant.

🚶‍♂️ Walking Tracks from the Picnic Area:
1️⃣ A short walk to the Young’s Creek waterfall
2️⃣ A forest loop track through lush vegetation
3️⃣ The longer Reservoir Walk to the historic wall

🗺️ How to Get There:
From Orbost, head north and turn right onto Bonang Road. Travel 6.3 km and turn right onto 4.5 Mile Track. Continue for 2.3 km until you reach Storers Track. Turn right and follow it east—after crossing Young’s Creek, park in the cleared area opposite the picnic site.

🌞 Why Visit?
Young’s Creek offers a unique mix of natural beauty, history, and tranquillity. Pack a picnic, enjoy the peaceful setting, and explore at your own pace.

Thurra River Campground 🌊🌿

More than 30 campsites are now open for bookings 🙌

After being closed for several years following the devastating 2020 fires that destroyed the Thurra River Bridge, this much-loved spot is finally back!

Nestled in coastal woodland near Point Hicks, the campground sits between the winding Thurra River and the rugged Southern Ocean, making it the perfect base for a relaxed family getaway or a quiet escape.

Just north of the bridge, Thurra North Camping Area offers a more elevated experience, with 7 non-powered sites and sweeping views across the river, ocean and surrounding dunes.

🔥 A few things to know before you go:
• Campfires permitted in designated fire pits only
• Bring your own drinking water
• Accessible via 2WD (Cann River → Tamboon Rd → Point Hicks Rd)
• New toilet facilities are in place, with BBQs, picnic tables and more on the way

There’s also a shared picnic area near the entrance, making it a great spot for day visitors too.

A stunning coastal campground thats ready to be enjoyed once again 🌿

🪶 New in the Hut! 🪶

We’re excited to have a beautiful new book on the shelves — Hide and Beak by Georgia Angus — available now for just $25.

Perfect for young nature lovers (ages 5+), this fun and handy birdwatching guide is packed with fascinating facts about the birds you can spot right in your own backyard.

Can you hear laughter from the gum trees? Spot a rainbow lorikeet having a noisy chat? Or figure out who dropped that big white feather? 🐦

With around 800 native birds in Australia, Hide and Beak helps kids (and adults!) identify some of the most common ones, learn about their personalities, what they eat, and where to find them. You can even listen to real bird calls by scanning the QR codes throughout the book!

Take it with you wherever you go — from the backyard to the bush, beach, or park — and see how many birds you can spot.

A great little gift idea or something fun for the kids.🌿
