Misthaven Holiday Units
Australia's First Motel
Ownership of motor vehicles grew rapidly during the 1920's, and wealthy car-owners lobbied governments for new roads to explore. Ironically, the Great Depression helped their cause. Governments desperate need for employment relief justified capital works projects previously deemed too expensive.
The Main Roads Commission (MRC) constructed the Mt Spec Tourist Road in the 1930s, with unemployment relief scheme funds. The MRC then responsible for all tourist facilities (such as walking tracks, picnic sheds and boat ramps), also built Mist Haven units as Australia's first ever 'motor hotel'. In 1941, this innovative design was in direct response to increased levels of car ownership. Known today as 'motel-style', the design allowed vehicles to be parked close to the accommodation.
During World War II, the units were commandeered as officers accommodation, a welcome change from the tents. Post-war, the units were known as 'Uncle Tom's Cabins' and once again became available for visitors.
