Locals who know the Nepean River well will often talk about a place called “The Narrows” — the dramatic entrance to the Nepean Gorge just upstream from Penrith.

It’s called The Narrows for a very simple reason: the river suddenly tightens and squeezes between steep sandstone cliffs as it enters the gorge country of the lower Blue Mountains. After the wider stretches of river around Penrith and Emu Plains, the landscape changes almost instantly. The banks close in, the cliffs rise sharply, and the river begins winding through ancient sandstone country carved over millions of years.

For generations, boaters, fishermen and river locals have used the name to describe this striking section of the river where the “open” Nepean gives way to the wild beauty of the gorge. It’s one of those unofficial local names that has simply stuck through years of river life and storytelling.

The Narrows also marks the beginning of one of the most scenic stretches of the Nepean River — a place of towering cliffs, quiet waters, native wildlife and deep cultural history connected to the Darug people and the ancient river system itself.

Even today, as you cruise through the Narrows on one of the Nepean Belle cruises, there’s a feeling that you’re leaving civilisation behind, entering another world entirely.

A world you wouldn’t believe existed, entered from a wharf in Penrith, Western Sydney.

Come see for yourself!
