Two trips with World Expeditions that show very different sides of the USA, and neither involves a theme park.

The first is a self-guided cycle along the coast of Maine in the warmer months. Lighthouses, island ferries, fresh lobster and the car-free carriage roads of Acadia, all at your own pace with your bags carried ahead.

The second swaps wheels for snowshoes. Yellowstone in winter, when the crowds disappear and you're tracking bison and wolves across the snow with a naturalist, then watching Old Faithful erupt into freezing air.

There's a particular kind of wellness holiday I've loved planning lately. The kind built around water.

Not a pool by a swim-up bar. Proper geothermal soaking, the sort that's been woven into daily life for centuries in places like Japan and Budapest. You come out of it softer, calmer, sleeping better.

Here are five of my favourites, from a quiet outdoor onsen in Japan to our own Australian hot springs an easy drive from Melbourne.

I booked a family into Rough Creek Lodge this week and had to stop and share it.

Picture 9,000 acres of Texas ranch land, then drop a genuinely five-star lodge right in the middle of it.

The kids get horseback riding, zip lining, fishing and the largest maze in the state. The parents get a balcony over the lake, Chef Gerard Thompson's cooking, and a pool to come back to at the end of the day.

It sits about an hour and a half from Dallas, so it slots neatly into a wider US trip or works beautifully on its own.

This is exactly the kind of stay I love finding. Real adventure for the little ones, proper rest for everyone else.

Langkawi doesn't get talked about the way Bali or Phuket do, and I think that's exactly what makes it special.

Picture ancient rainforest on one side, the calm Andaman Sea on the other, and a pace that finally lets everyone slow down. There's a cable car ride that has the kids glued to the windows, mangrove tours where you spot eagles overhead, and quiet beaches where little ones can splash for hours while the older ones try their hand at jet skiing.

For where to stay, I keep coming back to The Westin Langkawi. Four pools, a kids club that genuinely keeps the younger ones happy, family villas with room to spread out, and a spa for when you've earned a moment to yourself. Luxurious, but never stuffy.

The dry season runs roughly November to April, which sits nicely alongside our summer and Easter holidays. It's also when the best family rooms book out first.

When people think of a USA holiday, the same few places seem to come up every time. Some of my favourite trips, though, are the ones that don't make the obvious list.

Collette has been guiding travellers since 1918, and they do the in-between parts of America so well.
Three I keep coming back to: Montana's Big Sky country, the old West through Wyoming and the Dakotas, and the music cities of the South lit up for the festive season.

Some hotels you book. This one you move into.

The Zetter has just opened its newest London townhouse in Bloomsbury, and it's exactly the kind of place I get quietly excited to recommend. Six restored Georgian townhouses, a short stroll from the British Museum, done up to feel less like a hotel and more like the home of a very well travelled collector. Antiques, gathered objects, little details layered into every corner.

The 68 rooms carry that same collected feel. Muted colours, unexpected pattern combinations, some with four-poster beds and claw-foot tubs and Egyptian cotton sheets you won't want to leave. Downstairs there's the Parlour for cocktails and small plates, a quiet garden when you need a breather, and an afternoon tea that's worth planning a day around.

It's the sort of place that rewards slowing down. Somewhere to drop your bags, pour a drink, and feel like London belongs to you for a few days.

There's a beautiful new name on Sentosa, and I've had my eye on it.

The Laurus has opened as a Luxury Collection resort, and it's exactly the kind of place I love pointing clients toward. The whole design takes its cue from a well-travelled collector's home, with Peranakan and colonial touches layered through the rooms, so it feels personal rather than polished for the sake of it.

For families, the location does a lot of the heavy lifting. You're moments from the Singapore Oceanarium, with a pool (and a dedicated children's pool) to come back to when little legs need a rest. And for the grown-ups, BODHI Spa is right on site, which my followers will know is one of my favourites for a proper reset.

Singapore is such a clever stop, whether it's the whole holiday or a stopover on the way somewhere else. This one is going straight on my list for 2026 and 2027 escapes.

Something exciting for anyone who loves a truly exceptional spa experience.

BODHI Spa, which most Australians would know from its award-winning locations across the country, has just opened its first international spa in Singapore. It's now operating within The Laurus, a Luxury Collection Resort, at Resorts World Sentosa, and from everything I've read it looks extraordinary.

Six treatment rooms, a private VIP Bathhouse with sauna and contrast therapy, guided meditation in a dedicated Relax Lounge, and two genuinely innovative wellness technologies: the Zerobody Dry Float for deep restoration and the Recovery Red Light Pod for cellular recovery and sleep. It's a full wellness experience, not just a massage and a candle.

If Singapore is on your radar this year, whether as a stopover or a destination in its own right, this is absolutely worth knowing about. I'd love to help you plan a trip that includes it.

I don't often post about hotels closer to home, but 1 Hotel Melbourne genuinely deserves a moment.

I stayed here recently after the Switzerland Tourism Workshop and it was one of those properties that surprises you. Nestled right on the banks of the Yarra River in the Docklands, the whole ethos of the hotel is built around sustainable luxury, and it shows in every detail. Natural materials, living plant walls, beautifully considered rooms and a spa that I could have happily spent an entire day in.

The Bamford Spa, indoor pool, exceptional dining and the Yarra River views from the rooms make it just as compelling for a short city escape as it is for interstate visitors wanting somewhere special to land in Melbourne.

It's on my recommend list without hesitation.
