Hi y'all.

The well documented missing luggage saga is a disgrace and a black mark on airlines and airport corporations. How hard is it to put a suitcase on a conveyor belt and send it to the flight that is leaving for the destination marked on the suitcase tag?
Having said that, I understand there are available Apple Electronic Tags that, attached to a suitcase, can pinpoint the suitcase location. Whilst I am not touting business for Apple, it may be worth looking at for peace of mind.

Happy travelling.

Just a little reminder to those who think they know more than travel agents:

THE FEDERAL COURT HAS SLAPPED TRIVAGO WITH A $44.7 MILLION FINE FOR MISLEADING CONSUMERS ABOUT HOTEL ROOM RATES ON ITS WEBSITE AND ITS ICONIC TV ADS.

In January 2020, the Federal Court found that Trivago had breached the Australian Consumer Law by misleading consumers when representing that its website would quickly and easily help users identify the best deal or cheapest rates available for a given hotel.

In fact, Trivago used an algorithm that placed significant weight on online hotel booking sites that paid Trivago the highest cost-per-click fee, which often did not highlight the cheapest rates for consumers, according to Australia’s consumer watchdog, the ACCC.

Trivago admitted that between December 2016 and September 2019 it received approximately $58 million in cost-per-click fees from clicks on offers that were not the cheapest available offer for a given hotel, causing consumers to overpay hotel booking sites approximately $38 million for rooms featured in those offers.

One wonders what our wonderful Emperor will announce on Friday in regards to WA joining the rest of Australia and the world. If you all want to rush in and book a trip for 2022, 2023 or 2024, be my guest. Vaccine mandates, this rule, that rule - I am nearly over it I must say. The magic ingredient of life - "Hope" looms in that we all hope some form of normality returns to travel soon. Look forward to being of service to all of our long term, loyal friends (clients).

It happens in other countries too - read below:

Canadian online travel agency FlightHub has been hit with a hefty fine for making various misleading claims about prices and posting fake reviews.

After a lengthy investigation the Canadian Competition Bureau alleged it falsified reviews and misled customers about its services and hidden fees.

The CCB and FlightHub Group settled and the OTA must pay a $5 million penalty.

Two company directors agreed to penalties of $400,000 each as part of the settlement.

The company must remove online reviews that were posted on behalf of the company that were falsely attributed to genuine customers.

"We have pursued this case relentlessly to ensure that Canadians would be protected against any further deceptive marketing by FlightHub and its directors," said Matthew Boswell, Commissioner of Competition.

We are still here at Axis Travel, working to retrieve client refunds AND taking new business and holiday bookings for domestic travel, both inter and intrastate. 😊

BORDERS ARE OPENING AROUND AUSTRALIA - except for WA. Hopefully our Premier will soon make an announcement.

Meanwhile, an interesting read for the "do it yourselfer" may be the misleading advertisement conviction of Trivago. See below:

The Full Federal Court has dismissed an appeal by hotel comparison site Trivago against an earlier decision which found Trivago had breached the Australian Consumer Law by making misleading representations about hotel room rates on its website and television advertising

In January 2020, the Federal Court had ruled that Trivago had misled consumers by representing its website would quickly and easily help users identify the cheapest rates available for a given hotel.

The judge at first instance had found that Trivago did not sufficiently disclose to users that its website used an algorithm that gave prominence to accommodation providers paying Trivago a higher payment fee (cost per click), meaning that the most prominent offers were often not the cheapest offers for consumers.

The primary judge also found that Trivago misled consumers through the use of strike through prices and text in different colours because Trivago often compared the rate for a standard room with the rate for a luxury room at the same hotel.

Today’s decision by the Full Federal Court upholds the primary judge’s decision that Trivago’s website representations misled consumers.

“This is a win for consumers and is an important warning to comparison sites that they must not mislead consumers about the results they recommend,” ACCC Chair Rod Sims said.

“We brought this case because we were concerned that consumers were being misled by Trivago’s claims that their site was getting the best deal for consumers, when in fact they were shown the deals that benefited Trivago.”

“Trivago’s conduct meant that consumers may have paid more for a room at a hotel than they should have." Mr Sims said.

The matter will now return to the primary judge, who will consider the orders sought by the ACCC against Trivago at a later date. The ACCC is seeking orders for declarations, injunctions, penalties and costs.

Background

Trivago’s website aggregates deals offered by online hotel booking sites (like Expedia, Hotels.com and Booking.com) and hotel proprietors’ own websites for available rooms at a hotel and highlights one offer out of all online hotel booking sites (referred to as the ‘Top Position Offer’). However, Trivago’s own data showed that higher-priced room rates were selected as the Top Position Offer over alternative lower-priced offers in 66.8 per cent of listings.

Trivago’s revenue was primarily obtained from cost-per-click (CPC) payments from online hotel booking sites, which significantly affected that booking site’s appearance and prominence in search results.

In August 2018 the ACCC instituted proceedings against Trivago and in January 2020, the Federal Court found Trivago had breached the Australian Consumer Law when it made misleading representations about hotel room rates on its website and television advertising.

In March 2020, Trivago appealed the Court’s decision.
