Between March and November 1942, there were no women apart from local New Guineans in Port Moresby.
They had all been evacuated as the threat of Japanese invasion increased.
This photo shows the arrival of Australian nurses back into New Guinea.
A newspaper article at the time reports Australian and American soldiers cheering as the nurses disembarked from their ship ! 😊

Kokoda Crossing in my view represents the premier company conducting guided tours of the iconic and historic Kokoda Track. The attention to detail by Travis and the team is 2nd to none. High quality medical support increases safety and therefore the confidence of the trekkers but also must translate to a higher completion factor. The porters were reliable and thoroughly entertaining, with morning and evening singing and ritual welcome events along the way. We had Jamie as a guide whose professionalism and knowledge perfectly aligned with the level of reverence befitting this historic place. We were also lucky enough to hike with PillarsFor Pilgrims meaning we could honour our distant past hero’s alongside today’s. A private ANZAC Day at Abuari village was the pinnacle of this experience.
> Thanks again Kokoda Crossing for providing a once (hopefully not) in a lifetime experience.

Doesn’t get much better than this.
21 year old Luke Daniels was by far the youngest member on our latest trek.
His passion for Australia and pride in our military was clearly evident from the start and with that came the honour of carrying our flag over the finish line.
Also pictured is Hilbert, our Lead Guide. He carries a deep compassion for our trekkers, which is accompanied by mountain bred toughness and steely eyed determination. We are lucky to have him … in fact we are lucky to have both of them.

Farewell to a legend 🙏🏼
Bill Grayden left us yesterday at the incredible age of 105 years.
A stalwart of the 2/16th Battalion, he fought bravely in both the Pacific and Middle Eastern theatres of World War 2.
His exploits at Brigade Hill and Ioribaiwa on the Kokoda Track rank amongst the most amazing stories you’ll hear about when trekking this sacred ground.
Goodbye Bill, you’ll be missed by many and we send our condolences to your family.
