Important news re: Australian passport holders & notably UK / Australian Dual Citizens entering the UK from Feb 2026

The UK immigration landscape is undergoing its most significant transformation.

Perhaps the most far-reaching change for short-term visitors, the UK will strictly enforce its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system from 25 February 2026, requiring Australian passport holders to obtain digital pre-travel permission. The government has described this as implementing a “no permission, no travel” policy.

The ETA costs £16, remains valid for two years or until passport expiry, and allows multiple visits of up to six months;

Airlines, ferry operators and train companies will check ETA status at boarding and deny travel without valid permission;

Each traveller, including children and infants, requires their own ETA;

UK Citizens (even if holding dual citizen) will have to have a valid UK passport from 25th February 2026. From this date dual Australian-British citizens will need to produce a valid British Passport.

Dual British citizens who cannot produce a valid British passport will need to have additional identity checks and will not be able to go through UK passport control until their British nationality is verified.

The new European Entry/Exit System (EES) starts on 12 October for all non-EU nationals, including Australians, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. There may be longer border queues.
