Lake Ballard is about 800km from Perth Western Australia in the Shire of Menzies north of Kalgoorlie. It is a sacred site to the Wongi/Wangkatha people. If you read/listen to some of the stories to understand the importance, you'll be so enraptured by the location and DEFINITELY want to go there between July and maybe April ;) … and here I was visiting in June - peak period for Milky Way astrophotography. It is also home to the Antony Gormley statues - a series of 51 different statues spread out over a 10km diameter area. I was out here doing some photos and video and measuring light pollution.

For the astrophotographer, the location is a Bortle 4. The statues are a dark colour you'd want to light or blend them. The ground can get a bit muddy deeper into the lake, so gumboots are highly recommended and either a towel or small tarp to kneel in or put gear down on. With the statues deep into the lake, recommend using photopills to work out how each statue will compose with the MW and a GPS (to set waypoints in the dark). I'd definitely check the Menzies social media page to see what the conditions for the road are like as the road can be subject to flooding.
