Well, hello spring.

September has arrived, and in New Zealand it shows up fast. Tūī working the cherry blossom before the petals go. Lambs back in the paddocks with daffodils coming up around them. Willows greening along the river with snow still sitting on the tops. And the jet boats, which never stopped.

Spring runs September through November: longer days, a landscape that changes week by week, and that stretch of the year before the summer peak gets going. Gardens in flower and snow still on the mountains at the same time is a South Island thing that catches most first-timers off guard.

If you're dreaming about New Zealand later this year, this is your reminder that summer is closer than it looks.

Four photos, four different reasons to come in spring. Which one would you go for first?

There’s more than one way to road trip around New Zealand. 🚗♿️

We have accessible self-drive itineraries covering Auckland, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington, designed for travellers with limited mobility.

Depending on the itinerary, that includes step-free hotel rooms, attractions chosen for level access, a car delivered to your accommodation, and a route planned around shorter driving days.

Accessibility means different things to different travellers, so these itineraries get adjusted. Different accommodation, alternative experiences, extra nights, a different vehicle.

With summer coming, this is a good time to look at North Island by road. If you have accessibility requirements, talk to us about them before you book. Our travel specialists will work out what suits you and quote it accurately.

We’re in the last days of winter in New Zealand, which means summer suddenly doesn’t feel that far away.

This is Takapuna Beach on Auckland’s North Shore in summer, with pōhutukawa in bloom and Rangitoto Island sitting just across the water.

December, January and February bring long daylight hours, beach days and some of the busiest travel weeks of the year. If you’re coming over Christmas, New Year or during January holidays, now is a good time to start locking in your route, accommodation and experiences.

And Auckland deserves more than an arrival or departure night. Takapuna, Rangitoto and the wider Hauraki Gulf can easily fill a few summer days before the road trip continues.

Time to turn the saved posts into an actual New Zealand trip. Comment SUMMER and we’ll send you our planning guides to help get it into shape.

Three months from now, parts of New Zealand will start looking more like this. 💜🚗

Lupins begin appearing across parts of the South Island in late spring, with some of the biggest displays usually arriving from late November into December.

They’re also one of those things that make a road trip feel different. You might have the day mapped out, then a lake, a mountain view or a roadside full of flowers gives you a reason to stop.

And when the scenery outside the window looks like this, being able to stop is kind of the point.

Big thanks to Thanh_wanderlust for letting us share this gorgeous glimpse of New Zealand in lupin season. The roadside view, turquoise lakes, horseback trails and that final walk through the flowers are exactly the kind of moments that make a road trip here hard to forget.

Go give Thanh_wanderlust a follow for more New Zealand travel inspiration.

Becky came all the way from Washington State prepared for a proper New Zealand winter.

She and her family packed plenty of warm gear for their South Island trip, not quite knowing what the weather would do. Then Ho**er Valley in mid-August gave them this. ☀️🏔️

Blue skies, snow on the peaks and one of those days that makes you glad you packed for every possibility.

Becky told us this was her third trip to New Zealand, and Ho**er Valley ended up being the best part of this trip.

They also stayed at Hermitage, Aoraki/Mount Cook at Aoraki/Mount Cook.

A pretty good reminder that winter in New Zealand can surprise you. Come prepared for the cold, but leave room for days like this too.

Somebody meets you at the airport. That’s how these start.

Then someone else takes care of getting you around New Zealand.

Across these itineraries, that could mean watching the Southern Alps roll past your window aboard the TranzAlpine, cruising beneath the peaks of Piopiotahi Milford Sound, crossing Lake Whakatipu aboard the TSS Earnslaw, exploring Rotorua and Hobbiton™, or spending a night on the water aboard the Milford Mariner.

The attractions are already built into the itinerary. Most meals are sorted. Your bags are taken care of along the way. Instead of working out driving times, parking, checking-ins and what needs booking next, you get concentrated on the trip itself.

Right now, five coach tours have savings on selected departures, with up to AU$500 off per person. The offer closes 31 August 2026.

September and October are the nearest departures shown in the slides, so they’re worth asking about first if you’ve been thinking about travelling to New Zealand this year.

Tell us which your caught your eye and we’ll come back with the details.

Operated by Grand Pacific Tours. Prices shown are for Australian travellers, land only and subject to availability. Deals apply to new bookings and may be withdrawn earlier.

Summer road trips are better when the day’s drive ends somewhere like this.

Whangamatā, on the Coromandel Peninsula, is made for a slower stop: ocean beach on one side, sheltered harbour on the other, and a few hours where the car keys stay put.

Worth knowing if you’re planning around Christmas and New Year. This stretch is where New Zealanders holiday too, so accommodation and rental vehicles can book out early. Book ahead and leave room in the itinerary for the places you’ll want to stay a little longer.

Take the quiz in our comment section to find the route that suits you.

Nelson Tasman gets one night on most South Island itineraries. It’s the sunniest region in the country and people drive through it on the way to the glaciers.

The Great Taste Trail is the argument for staying two. It was built around a region that grows and makes things, so the riding is spaced between cellar doors, orchards, breweries and a wharf. Most people ride a section in the morning, spend a long lunch somewhere, and ride back in the afternoon. That’s the whole day, and it’s a good one.

The trail earns its name. You’ll spend a decent part of the day off the bike, and that isn’t a failure of planning.

Swipe for two rides worth building a day around, and where they fit in your drive.

December to March is the summer window. August is when these trips get planned.

Comment GREAT TASTE TRAIL and we’ll send you our guide to riding it.

Classic New Zealand scenery in summer (December-February) 🇳🇿☀️

Lupins in the foreground, sheep across the paddocks and the mountains rising behind them. This is Glenorchy, at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and one of those places where the drive is almost as memorable as the destination.

If Queenstown is on your New Zealand itinerary, Glenorchy deserves a spot too.

Our Glenorchy guide is in the pinned comment.
