We’ve rounded up 10 things worth knowing before your first trip, and what to do about each one.

For travel journalist Chelia Batkin, this was the view between adventures.

Aboard a Ritchies bus between Queenstown and Wānaka, her camera caught snow-covered mountains, golden tussock and winding roads, with a flock of sheep briefly bringing the journey to a pause.

Chelia filmed this in late August while travelling south through New Zealand. She’d just spent six nights aboard a Fiordland Discovery boat, with wilderness walks, kayaking, humpback whale sightings and a complete break from phone service and internet. Back on land, it took a few days to shake the feeling that she was still rocking on the boat.

Ahead was Lake Hāwea Station, where she would learn about regenerative farming and conservation, watch sheep being shorn and wool graded, and make time for The Secret Sauna and a swim in the lake.

With experiences like those on either side, the bus ride could easily have been a footnote. Chelia’s footage gives it a story of its own.

Eight days is a lot of your holiday to spend hiking. Here’s what makes it worth it.

You get to experience New Zealand’s North Island at a different pace. Ancient rainforest in Whirinaki. Vast volcanic landscapes in Tongariro. Natural hot water to sink into after time on the trails.

And then there are the experiences a day walk can’t quite offer.

Carrying what you need into the backcountry. Preparing dinner with your fellow hikers. Waking up in a mountain hut or tent, knowing the next stretch of wilderness is waiting just outside.

The Ultimate North Guided Hiking Tour takes you on an eight-day journey between Auckland and Wellington, with experienced guides, a small group and two multi-day backcountry hikes.

It does ask something of you physically. Expect uneven trails, long days of walking (sometimes up to 8-9 hours) and a backpack weighing around 10-12 kg on certain sections. Accommodation is a mix of backcountry huts, camping, cabins and lodges.

You don’t need previous multi-day hiking experience, but good fitness and a willingness to get involved are essential.

There’s plenty to look forward to in a New Zealand summer (December to February). For those who love hiking, this is an opportunity to spend more time in the landscapes that make North Island extraordinary.

A cycling holiday with a very good excuse to keep stopping.

Coffee before the next stretch. Something fresh at a roadside stall. A waterfront table you’re happy to linger at.

Nelson Tasman’s Great Taste Trail makes the stops part of the experience, with woodland tracks, vineyard scenery and coastal views filling the kilometres between them.

You want the coastal hikes. Your travel partner wants a comfortable bed and a proper dinner. This Coromandel escape makes a convincing case for going together.

Spend four days exploring coastal trails, native forest and the Pinnacles’ sweeping views, carrying only a day pack. There’s time for New Chums Beach too, when the tides allow, with its pōhutukawa-framed shoreline pictured here at sunrise.

Give one of your summer holiday days to the West Coast. This is what you could do with it.

Stand above the turquoise water at Hokitika Gorge, wander through native bush with a guide, then swap walking shoes for pedals and explore at your own pace.

Your self-guided ride begins at Dorothy Falls and follows Lake Kaniere’s forested shores, with time to pause for photos and a packed lunch at Hans Bay. The historic Kaniere Water Race and Kaniere Tram Road lead you back into Hokitika.

With an eBike, helmet, route briefing, shuttle transfers and trail support, you can spend less time sorting the logistics and more time enjoying where you are.

Your next New Zealand road trip could use a few days on two wheels.

The Otago Central Rail Trail takes you through old railway tunnels, across bridges and into small towns worth stopping for. You can ride independently with the essentials arranged, or join a guided trip with support along the way.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing takes 7-8 hours. This summer, give it more than one day.

Summer (Dec-Feb) is the main hiking season, but alpine weather can still change quickly. Our 4-Day Tongariro Guided Hiking Tour - Lodge Based gives you more room. The Crossing is one of four walking days. The others include Old Coach Road near Ohakane and the Taranaki Falls loop.

Guides, meals, three lodge nights and return transport from Rotorua or Taupō are included.

Weather, volcanic activity and track conditions can change the itinerary. If Day 2 isn’t suitable, guides may try the Crossing later in the trip. Completing is not guaranteed.

Driving? Rotorua has parking options, and your dropped back at your car.

An island escape worth adding to your Auckland summer itinerary.

Just a ferry ride from Auckland, Tiritiri Matangi Island is home to some of New Zealand’s most fascinating native wildlife.

Once largely cleared for farming, the island has been transformed through decades of conservation work into a thriving sanctuary for native birds, including the takahē, tīeke (saddlebacks) and hihi (stitchbirds).

Spend the day walking through regenerating forest, listening for birdsong, exploring coastal tracks and finding a quiet spot overlooking the Hauraki Gulf.

It’s a lovely way to experience a different side of Auckland, especially during summer (December to February).

And with so much to explore around the city, Tiritiri Matangi fits beautifully into a longer North Island itinerary.
