Bali confirms start date for new tax on international visitors.

Tourism officials in Bali will declare their love for international visitors on Valentine’s Day 2024 by introducing the island’s tourist tax of IDR150,000 (AUD$15) on all arrivals, including children.

The fee, announced earlier this year, will apply separately for each entry to Bali, meaning that if travellers land at Denpasar Airport and immediately connect to Lombok, the Gili Islands or anywhere else in Indonesia before returning to Bali, they will be hit with the levy twice.

The charge will apply to all foreign arrivals, Indonesian residents and citizens will be exempt.

But the new levy will be a separate charge to the existing visa-on-arrival fee of IDR500,000 (AUD$50) charged to Australian travellers for their 30-day entry to the island hotspot. This is because one fee is charged by Indonesia’s Ministry of Immigration, whereas the new tourist tax is collected by provincial officials in Bali.

Both fees will continue to be charged in Indonesian Rupiah, however international debit and credit cards along with prepaid travel money cards will continue to be accepted.

Legislation to formalise the levy is now before Indonesia’s Central Government, having been signed off by local authorities in Bali.

Bali Tourism Department boss Tjok Bagus Pemayun said while the new tax will initially be charged on arrival in Bali, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility visitors may be able to pay the charge online before their flight lands.

Officials from the tourism department say the new IDR150,000 tax will be spent to preserve the island’s environment, nature and culture.
