Why would you book ahead?
Many of our guests prefer to explore the island and book activities as they go, which is great when you don’t know the island well or unsure about weather conditions. If you’re a day traveller or only have limited time on the island, we do recommend booking beforehand to ensure availability on your preferred day. If you do wait until last minute and your preferred tour ends up being sold out - no worries! Both our tours visit beautiful spots along the west coast road, and we’re happy to listen to what you’d like to see and know about the island!

Being an island situated in the dry tropics, we have a very distinct difference between dry season from around April to November and our wet season from December to March. While in dry season we can go months without a drop of rain and the wind stirs up dust covering everything from forests to cars, during wet season our waterfalls and creeks are flowing, the bush is lush with new growth and stinger nets protect swimmers from box jellyfish and Irukandji that follow warmer water. Due to the heat though, the wet season is usually the quietest time of the year, while peak holiday season runs
from June to October.
While southern states in Australia are regularly cold and windy, it’s usually a lot balmier on the island, with night time temperatures still sitting around 14ºC.

Joining our tours means joining guides who care for the island and its ecology. We also donate a small percentage of our profits from every West Coast Eco Adventure to support the Magnetic Island Nature Care Association (MINCA). Tim, the owner of MI Ride, is an accredited Eco Guide and Savannah Guide, and MI Ride is an accredited Sustainable Tourism Business. During our tours we take care of wild life, and respect the nature surrounding us, leaving only footprints.

Do you know where different bays and beaches on the island get their name from?

• Before European settlement, Horseshoe Bay was known as Bee-Ran. It almost stayed that way, until it was renamed after its shape.

• Arcadia gets its classical name from the idyllic Greek providence of Arcadia, representing an idealized version of a peaceful paradise. Fitting, no?

• Arthur, Geoffrey and Florence Bay were named after early European settlers in the region - members of the Pearce family.

• West Point was almost officially named Kee-Woo in 1922, the indigenous name for the Burdekin Plum.

• Picnic Bay was originally known as Ca-Moo-Mili, later renamed after the popular picnics taking place on the beach!

Why do we start at certain times?

Our Eco Adventure starts at 8:15 all year round and finishes around 12, with enough time to catch the ferry back to Townsville or enjoy a lunch on the island. By leaving early, we avoid the midday heat - especially important during the hotter months!

For our Sunset Safari, we leave at either 4:30 or 5 when the sun starts setting later during the summer, so our guests can enjoy plenty of time at West Point to enjoy the refreshments and of course sunsets as gorgeous as the one showcased here!

Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) is known for its distinctive environment with huge granite tors, making up most of the surface of the island. The formation of this unique landscape began 275 million years ago when molten granite was pushed through the surface with volcanic force.
Over time, the overlying volcanic rock weathered away.
Along the fracture lines, the underlying granite mass decomposed along fracture lines, and eventually developed into the big tors and rounded domes, sometimes bigger than a house and in impossible positions!
