Public transport is more than just buses and taxis — it’s about connection. It’s about ensuring people can get to work, school, medical appointments, and community events, no matter where they live. In Port Augusta and across regional South Australia, we know the reality: public transport options are limited, and for many people, that means relying on weekly buses or assisted transport or going without.
That’s why I’m pleased that the State Government is developing a Public Transport Strategy that will shape the next 30 years of transport planning in South Australia. Importantly, they’re also undertaking a Regional Public Transport Review, recognising that the needs of our communities are vastly different from those in metropolitan Adelaide.
For us in Port Augusta, this is a real opportunity to make our voices heard. Whether it’s better connections between towns, more frequent services, or even entirely new ideas for transport access—now is the time to speak up.
To develop a truly inclusive transport strategy, the government is engaging with communities across the state—city and country—at the same time. The goal is to get a full picture of what South Australians need from their transport system, and that picture must include the unique challenges of living and working in the regions.
A community information session will be held here in Port Augusta on Thursday, 5 June 2025, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. I encourage everyone who has something to say about transport in our area to attend.
You can also take part in other ways online visit YOUR SAY www.yoursay.sa.gov.au
• Complete the ‘Future of public transport’ survey.
• Submit a written comment to help shape the future.
• Attend a webinar if you can’t attend the face-to-face session.
Let’s make sure the strategy reflects the reality of life in Port Augusta and the wider region.
And while we’re thinking about how people get around, let’s not forget where they come to gather, learn, and grow once they arrive—our public libraries.
The Local Government Association of South Australia has launched the “How Good Are Libraries?” campaign to highlight the incredible value of our libraries—and rightly so. The numbers speak for themselves:
• More than 1 in 4 South Australians are library users.
• 487,000+ active library members across the state.
• Over 64,000 programs delivered every year—from storytime and digital literacy to job search support and seniors’ tech help.
• 11.5 million items loaned annually from a network of over 140 public libraries.
• A whopping $253 million in community value generated across South Australia.
Here in Port Augusta, our library is a vital part of the community. It offers far more than books—it provides digital access, historical archives, a safe space for study and creativity, and inclusive programs for people of all ages. It's where lifelong learning begins and where community continues. Plan a time to visit our public library this week!
Finally, last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the LGA Ordinary Meeting, followed by the Lord Mayors Dinner at the historic Adelaide Town Hall. It was a pleasure to reconnect with many Mayors.
While our communities vary in size and location, we share a deep commitment to our local people, practical problem-solving, and a passion for building stronger, more resilient towns.
These rare gatherings of Mayors from across South Australia are valuable opportunities to share ideas, discuss challenges, and strengthen partnerships between our communities. Continued collaboration at this level helps ensure strong, united leadership for the benefit of all South Australians.
Until next time, stay well and reflect on all that's good in our lives.

🖤💛❤️ Linley Shine, Mayor, City of Port Augusta and Council staff were proud to attend the Reconciliation Breakfast at Port Augusta Secondary School this morning as part of National Reconciliation Week 2025.
This year’s theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” reminds us that reconciliation means learning from the past, acting now, and shaping a fairer future together. We need to keep building bridges—through listening, learning, and walking forward with truth, respect and hope.
