Such awesome news!

Did you hear the news? 🪸💙

To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, Dr Charlie Veron surprised him with an extraordinary gift last week: a newly discovered coral species named in his honour.

Charlie and David have shared a long connection over the years — in fact, it was Sir David who famously gave Charlie the nickname “The Godfather of Coral.”

The species name can’t be revealed just yet, but we can say this coral now stands as a lasting tribute to one of the world’s greatest champions for nature and our oceans.

Even more special? This coral was collected during a Forever Reef Project expedition — part of the world’s first living coral biobank dedicated to protecting Great Barrier Reef corals from future extinction.

As Charlie says:

“The Reef Forever Biobank will protect all Great Barrier Reef coral species from future extinction.”

Here’s to two legends whose work continues to inspire hope for coral reefs worldwide. 🌏🐠

Today we celebrate 100 years of one of the greatest storytellers, educators, and advocates the natural world has ever known — David Attenborough 🪸🌏

Like so many around the world, Sir David has been an endless source of inspiration, wonder, and curiosity for us. His voice and storytelling have helped generations fall in love with the natural world — and understand what is at stake if we fail to protect it.

In 2016, speaking about the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, he asked:

“Do we really care so little about the earth on which we live that we don’t want to protect one of the world’s greatest wonders from the consequences of our behaviour?”

That call to action resonated deeply with us.

It helped inspire the launch of Great Barrier Reef Legacy, and ever since, we have worked as hard as we can to help secure a future for the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs around the world through conservation, education, research, and the Forever Reef Project.

We heard you, David. 💙

Happy 100th birthday — and thank you for inspiring so many people to care.
