There’s not much a camel can’t carry!
This magnificent photo entitled “Camels carrying a boat” was taken by John Flynn and is part of the Australian Inland Mission collection.
Rev Flynn took the photo sometime in the late 1800s but the location is unknown.
🐪
Up until the early 1860s, the belief was that there was a great inland sea in Central Australia, so an exploring expedition had to be prepared for anything…though it should be noted that as this photograph was taken by Rev Flynn at the end of the 19th century, this is NOT a photograph of one of those grand exploring expeditions.
Perhaps these cameleers were simply moving a boat between two river systems.
We will never the know the context of this photograph.
🐪
The camel carrying the mast has a weighted bag as balance on the near side. No doubt there is a similar weight counterbalancing the boat.
Neither of these loads would have been particularly heavy, just awkward to load.
But it’s still a fantastic photograph.

Note:
This is a colourised photograph of a glass negative. It was common practice to colour photographs back then.
And the boat is probably wooden, although it should be noted that camels regularly carried
large square iron water tanks. Similar to what can be seen in the foreground.
