Wednesday Way Back ⏳ Woolsthorpe’s Historic Local

Imagine pulling up by horse and cart for a drink… this was the place to be🍻

Built around 1866 as the Woolsthorpe National Hotel, it quickly became the heart of the community, hosting meetings, gatherings, and even helping organise local race days in the 1870s.

Early licensee Mrs E. Beggs welcomed locals and travellers alike, at a time when a country hotel was far more than a place for a drink, it was where news was shared, friendships were formed, and the district came together.

Today, as Woolsthorpe Union Station Hotel, it still carries that same spirit, proof that some places never lose their sense of connection ❤️

Wednesday Way Back ⏳

Overlooking the Southern Ocean, Battery Hill is one of Port Fairy’s most recognisable landmarks and a reminder of the town’s coastal history.

Named for the artillery batteries established in the late 1800s, the site reflects a period when communities prepared for potential threats as maritime trade grew in importance. Its elevated position provided clear views across the coastline and harbour approaches.

While there is little evidence the batteries were ever used in active defence, they represent an era of precautionary coastal planning rather than conflict.

Today, Battery Hill is a scenic lookout and community space, offering sweeping ocean views and a peaceful place to pause, far removed from its original intent.
