Port Fairy’s official and fully accredited tourism information centre is operated by friendly staff & Volunteers for the benefit of tourists. Providing tips and assistance so you get the most out of your stay, the centre is centrally located within the Railway Place precinct in the centre of town. They’re a wealth of local knowledge and will give you the insights you need to get the most out of yo

ur visit. Whether it’s help with a last-minute accommodation or tips about cool new restaurants and cafes, you’ll soon discover why they won a 2018 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. A visit to Port Fairy is not complete without a momento – the Visitor Information Centre Gift Shop specialises in quality gifts and souvenirs including Caps, Tea Towels, coffee cups, water bottles, pens, postcards, local publications and locally made products and produce, just to name a few. Free Wi-Fi and ample free parking, with designated free space available to park caravans, camper trailers, coaches and RVs.

A Weekend for Book Lovers, Dreamers & Curious Minds

The Port Fairy Literary Weekend returns next week, bringing together some of Australia’s most inspiring writers, artists and storytellers for three days of conversation, creativity and connection. Held from 11–13 September, the festival features author talks, panel discussions, workshops, family events and performances across some of Port Fairy’s most charming venues.

Whether you're an avid reader, aspiring writer or simply looking for the perfect spring weekend away, the Port Fairy Literary Weekend is a wonderful excuse to explore the coast while immersing yourself in stories and ideas.

Wednesday Wayback ⏳️

Bank Street on the Move, c.1910

This wonderful early 20th‑century scene shows horse‑drawn vehicles gathered in Bank Street, Port Fairy around 1910, with John Gray & Co.’s Federal Store standing proudly in the background. Locals once visited the Federal Store for everything from drapery and groceries to ironmongery and furniture, a true cornerstone of daily life in the township.

The group assembled looks very much like they’re preparing to head off to an event. Outings such as church picnics, community gatherings, or sports days were major social occasions at the time. In 1914, for example, Peach Bros. of Port Fairy famously ran a drag service to the Yambuk Sports Day, transporting locals for a full day of competition and celebration.

It’s a snapshot of a Port Fairy that moved at the pace of horses, where community events were woven into the rhythm of life and Bank Street was a lively meeting point for neighbours, families, and friends.

Wednesday Wayback ⏳

The tiny locality of Hexham would have been a rip-roaring place during the polo season early last century.

Founded in 1884, the Hexham Polo Club is the oldest continuously existing polo club in Australia and is still very much alive and kicking. Polo really took off in the 1890s and prominent local families such as the Hoods, Manifolds and Urquharts were there in the beginning and some of their descendants are still members. The polo drew visitors from Melbourne and the districts around Hexham and was a highlight of the social calendar, as were the associated glamorous parties and dances held well into the 20th century.

Attractively sited on the Hamilton Highway between Caramut and Mortlake, Hexham is one of Victoria’s oldest inland colonial settlements. With a ford crossing the Hopkins River, Hexham was an important Cobb & Co. staging point between Geelong and Port Fairy, as well as a stopover for goldfield miners.

Hexham is worth a BYO picnic stop because it retains some stunning bluestone buildings (former pubs, churches, hall and school), some of which have been restored as private residences. The region is also home to several historic Western District properties including Merrang and Boortkoi.
