KING MULGA

Meet the legendary ‘Mulga’, a massive male great white shark that ruled the Neptune Islands for over a decade. He was estimated to be around 13 feet long when first spotted in 2001 and grew to an impressive 16 feet over the next 13 years.

Based on his size in 2001, we believe ‘Mulga’ was likely 10-15 years old back then, making him over 25 years old years old by 2014. Unfortunately, ‘Mulga’ hasn’t been seen in over a decade now and based on the abrupt end to his regular appearances it’s suspected that he may no longer be with us. New sharks however are emerging as long term regulars at the Neptune Islands, ready to take his place.

If you’re interested in witnessing these magnificent creatures up close, the experienced Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions crew host comprehensive multi-day live aboard adventure tours, including surface cage diving and ocean floor diving along with shore parties and sea lion swimming on most itineraries.

The delightful Australian sea lion is the rarest sea lion species in the world with less than 12-14 thousand remaining and sadly their numbers continue to decline.

Spring conditions offer some of the clearest water of the year along with favourable conditions to stop off at Hopkins Island to see these most enchanting creatures on our way offshore to our shark diving destination at the Neptune Islands.

It’s hard to believe these Australian sea lions are actually wild animals that choose to approach and frolic with our snorkelers and divers each trip. They make unbeatable photographic subjects at locations we visit away from the Neptune Islands .

Happy International Shark Awareness Day!🦈

Nearly 550 various species of incredible and beautiful Sharks play essential roles in keeping the seas diverse and healthy, yet many populations are threatened and in decline from human influence.

International Shark Awareness Day should be promoted so we can better respect these fascinating and vulnerable creatures and recognise how we can act to save them.

Mako Magic. The shortfin mako is a smaller cousin of the great white and the fastest shark in the world. Its long pointed teeth are designed for gripping and holding onto its typical prey of fast and slippery fish and squid.

These teeth and jaws became the artistic inspiration for the famous Jaws movie poster, however unlike the great white, mako teeth are smooth-edged and not as well designed for tearing flesh.

We look forward to any sightings of these beautiful blue sharks at the Neptune Islands, with more chance on occasional spring summer tours.

Fascination over Fear - In recognition of the 50th Anniversary year of Jaws, the movie.

Somewhat ironically ‘Jaws’ in many ways changed the way we think about sharks for the better. Upon its release in June 1975 there was an incredible amount of interest generated in sharks worldwide that has inspired a whole generation of marine biologists and conservationists to appreciate great whites in particular and that attention has flowed over into wider public interest of other shark species.

Inadvertently, the fear generated from Jaws lead to such fascination in sharks that a plethora of documentaries, magazine articles, images and scientific publications has culminated not just the conservation of sharks, but to a care and understanding of the important role many species play the wider marine environment.

Our vessel the MV. Rodney Fox is used as a tourism platform but it’s also instrumental with vital research for this elusive and still largely misunderstood species. It’s incredibly rewarding to collaborate with scientists and to highlight this important species for appreciation and conservation.
