Tomorrow marks the day on September 1 in 1894 that the Aeolus ran aground onto the Agnes Reef near Pelican Point. The Aeolus had left Cape Town in South Africa on a voyage to load wool in Sydney. The ship had been sailing 29 days before being wrecked off our coast.

In the early hours of August 6th 1859, the SS Admella was wrecked off the coast of Carpenter Rocks. With the loss of 89 lives it is one of the worst maritime disasters in Australian History. Looking for something to do with the kids over the school holidays? We have Museum Explorer sheets for them to complete while you enjoy all the exhibits. The children will be looking to tick off 16 items e.g : A long nosed fur seal and 5 penguins, a swan's egg, Captain Broadfoot in his cabin, whale bones, ships cannons. Don't forget to ask the staff for a Port MacDonnell Maritime Museum sticker once they have ticked off all the items.

It will be 150 years next month that the Countess was wrecked at Port MacDonnell. She was loading potatoes for the Adelaide market but because of bad weather remained at mooring waiting for the weather to improve. At midnight she broke her moorings during a strong gale. The Countess had a crew of seven with Captain Avery as Master. They were all rescued by the lifeboat with no lives being lost.

Looking for something to do over winter? There have been some recent updates in the Museum: Our Admella exhibit has a new display cabinet and lighting. There are now 130 photos of local people from our archives on display. And if you missed our SA History Festival event, a copy of Charles Perryman's poetry book "Memories and Melodies" has been added next to his story board in the Lighthouse exhibit.

The book "Witness of Banff" is in our Museum Library thanks to Mhairi McKean who visited Port MacDonnell from Scotland and donated the book to us. Thanks to her and the Banff Preservation & Heritage Society we have been able to add more to our Witness exhibit. The Witness was driven ashore east of Cape Northumberland in May 1853.
