Gorilla Trekking 🦍 | Sabyinyo Lodge, Volcanoes National Park 🇷🇼

Waking up at Wilderness Sabyinyo Lodge, nestled in the foothills of Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes, felt like stepping into another world. The day began with misty mountain views before setting off on a guided trek through lush rainforest in search of a family of mountain gorillas.

The hike was steep, muddy, and wild, but every step was worth it. Coming face to face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat is one of the most humbling and unforgettable experiences imaginable. 🌿✨

The vital work of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), in partnership with the Wilderness Trust and the Forest of Hope Association, the forest is coming back to life. Together, we’ve reforested 20 hectares (some 50 acres) with over 35,000 indigenous trees and established a community-run nursery producing thousands more each year, expanding chimpanzee habitat and restoring land the locals depend on for their livelihood. ​

Today, more than 30 Eastern chimps call the Gishwati Forest home – and every tree we plant helps secure their future.​

In the Rwandan tradition of naming newborns, Kwita Izina, or 'to give a name', is an annual ceremony that bestows a name to each precious mountain gorilla born in Volcanoes National Park that year – a beautiful way to honour the collective efforts of a nation to protect their natural heritage. ​

​Through the Rwanda Development Board's groundbreaking gorilla tourism model, dedicated anti-poaching and reforestation initiatives, Rwanda has helped bring mountain gorillas back from the brink of extinction. And each year Kwita Izina reminds us of what's possible when governments, conservationists, and tourism work together. ​

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Rwanda in their mission. To our Rwandan teams, may it be a joyful Kwita Izina, and may there be many more to come. ​

Today’s the day!

Grant and Remember are out on the trails this morning, taking on the 45 km Timbavati Traverse to raise awareness and funds for vital conservation and community projects in and around the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.

Their goal? To raise money towards protecting our wildlife and supporting the people who share this land.

Preparations are in full swing for this Saturday’s Timbavati Traverse, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Each year, one of our dedicated field rangers joins one of the herds on the route — not just to take on the physical challenge, but to educate participants about the crucial work being done in anti-poaching. This is one of the causes the Traverse proudly supports.

For many of our rangers, it’s the first time tackling a 21km or 45km run, or even an 80km cycle — but they always rise to the occasion.

As Orlat Ndlovu (TNR Head Of Ranger Services) shared:
