The West Coast Wilderness Railway operates a heritage train experience through beautiful temperate rainforest in western lutruwita/Tasmania. Step back in history and climb aboard a majestic steam train at Queenstown Station or board one of our heritage diesel trains in Strahan before embarking on a memorable journey. Established in the late 1890s to transport minerals from the mines at Queenstown

to the port at Strahan, the railway passes through dense temperate rainforest and steep gorges, offering glimpses of Tasmania's rugged wilderness from the comfort of a warm carriage pulled by a heritage steam locomotive. Journey deep into the heritage of the wild West Coast, where tales of resilience and triumph showcase the iconic local spirit. The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a must-do experience.

Abt 5 out for some more testing, this time up the rack to Rinadeena!

Reports were that all went well, still more testing to do and some bugs to iron out but that is all part of the process.

If she continues to check off those boxes weโ€™ll have her back on track in no time ๐Ÿš‚

With Abt 5 now mobile and being moved in and out of the workshop regularly for testing, a shuffle of positions at Carswell Park was needed for ease and convenience.
So this morning whilst the sun was shining the crew brought our three active steam locomotives out to play!

This is the first time for some years that we have had so many operational steam engines together, and probably the first time that these particular three engines (L-R Abt 2, Abt 3 & Abt 5) have been lined up in over 60 years! These opportunities are rare and the workshop team had a wonderful time this morning 'playing trains' with their cameras at the ready.

In the not too distant future we look forward to having all three in service, lining up for train running, fighting for pole position at the front of the loco shed! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿš‚

A short time ago a little loco was feeling very tired, struggling to operate at full potential and in desperate need of a mechanical upgrade, with most parts (including her all important steam valves) showing signs of wear and tear.
It was at this stage that our enthusiastic crew brought her into the workshop for a major overhaul!..

This week was an exciting time for our railway as Abt 5 was brought out of the workshop for the first stages of testing. We have missed her quite a lot, and are thrilled to report that coming in at a 10/10 performance score is a little closer to having her join us back in service.

Just some of works included on this steam loco have been, a boiler tube replacement, boiler safety valves renewed, boiler studs and fittings replaced and renewed, a brake overhaul, full repaint, motion bearings and pins renewed, main steam slide valves renewed and new valve faces fitted, piston rods hard chromed and new piston rings fitted, steam regulators and fuel supply system overhauled, and all coppersmithing renewed.

This work has been completed in-house (minus the boiler re-tubing) by our incredible workshop team, Sam, Harry, Murph and Darren. A wonderful job well done team, we are looking forward to watching the end stages of her well deserved break!

If you have taken a journey onboard recently, or even a visit to our station museums, you would have learnt about our beloved railway family, the Hubbards.

One of the Teepookana children, Lindon, shared with us this photo of him playing at their childhood home, taken exactly 92 years ago yesterday!

We enjoy retelling stories from the Hubbard's adventures along the line, my how life was very different back then. We hope that you are able to climb aboard one day soon to hear the one about the pumpkins ๐Ÿ˜‰
