Volunteers are the lifeblood of our towns . Shop owners thrive when people are coming to see the many attractions in our towns , museums , paddle-steamers , park-runs and sporting clubs but lets not forget the ones that we take for granted sometimes . Lions clubs putting on free skin cancer checks , meals on wheels providing an invaluable service to our elderly , rotary clubs , our Ambos and fire brigade assisting at local events like speedways , lawn mower motorbike events mostly do this free of charge . for the younger people out there you will be mixing with all walks of life from mechanics , teachers , business owners and even old captains like me . You will learn so much about life in general and may even pick up full-time work because of the expanded circle of friends in the loop of our country towns . Most volunteer organizations will only ask a couple days a year where you can assist . so if you find yourself sitting at home watching tv on a weekend , reach out to the many clubs and volunteer organizations around and get involved . Who knows you could end up driving paddle-steamers with a river murray skippers ticket and bloody loving it .
