The Customs House sits on the Royal Circus and was the door to goods leaving Robe and goods coming in. Everything was carefully recorded - wool and horses out - merch and people in....

But how long has it been since you have been inside this historic building of significance. Here are a few piks to share a snapshot of our history.

The Customs House is open Wed, (sometimes Fri), Sat & Sun 10am-12noon and is run by the National Trust of Robe Branch volunteers.

Andrew Dening and his son Brodie head out of Robe on SA’s Limestone Coast well before daylight to pull in crayfish pots. With quotas on catches, the Denings don’t fish every morning of the nine-month season but sometimes need to go out three or four days, up to 112km out. Andrew, 64, is a seasoned third-generation fisherman, having started as a 17-year-old and taking over his father’s business in 1990. He says lights, GPS and radar have made fishing in the dark easier and safer, even when Robe’s fleet of some 30 boats is “going hammer and tongs”, because everyone knows where every boat is working.
