MEET ROSE OUR SENIOR BOTANIST

Ever wondered what a botanist actually does all day?

For Rose, around 60% of her time is spent out in the field — identifying plants, recording species and working out the vegetation communities that make each landscape unique.

Then it’s back to the office, where all those field notes, observations and records are turned into reports and maps.

But there’s one part of office life Rose particularly loves: the lab.

That’s where the plants collected on field trips are carefully preserved, creating a lasting botanical record of what was found, where it was growing and when.

So, while we might simply see a pretty wildflower on the side of the track, Rose is likely seeing its species, family, habitat, ecological significance…and probably several things the rest of us have completely missed. 🌼

That’s one of the joys of heading into the field with a botanist — you start seeing the landscape through very different eyes.

And if you join Rose on one of our Wildflower Wonderland tours (27 Aug, 3 Sep), you can ask her as many plant questions as you like. She’ll be very happy to answer them.

Spring is starting to stir around Roma and Gurulmundi

And from what we’re seeing, we’re expecting the wildflowers and butterflies to put on quite a show this year.

If spending a day immersed in wildflowers sounds like your idea of heaven, join us for our Wildflower Wonderland day tour with our senior botanist, Rose Aisthorpe.

Rose knows where to find the special things — and all the best spots to take you. Better still, you have her botanical knowledge at your disposal all day, so bring your questions and pick her brain!

You’ll also take home a Wildflower Spotter’s poster, so you can keep identifying what you discover long after the tour is over.

🌼 Wildflower Wonderland | 27 August & 3 September 🌼

And don’t forget — you can save $100 off your ticket through Queensland Regional Rewards when you book via the Experience Oz website.

Today is International Owl Awareness Day.

For us, the Boobook owl is much more than our logo. It represents the way we see the world — with curiosity, perspective and respect for nature.

Like the Boobook, we look beyond what’s obvious, helping our guests discover the remarkable stories hidden in the landscapes of the Carnarvon Ranges and Roma.

Happy International Owl Awareness Day. 🤎

The hot sun beats down as you walk through the outback. You may see fresh animal tracks in the red dirt and tall gum trees. Birds call from above, and leaves crunch beneath your boots. You will smell the dry earth and eucalyptus in the warm air.

What would you do if you spotted fresh tracks ahead?
