Buying a pig in a poke
At some time or other, we've all been warned not to buy a 'pig in apoke'! But how did that saying originally come about?
To buy a pig in a poke means that you have been cheated. Back in Saxon times, a suckling pig would be taken to market and sold in a sack, or poke. However, there were some shady characters around, and an unsuspecting buyer could find that a cat had been substituted for a pig in the poke.

To 'bring home the bacon' is to return home triumphantly, having achieved some plan or objective, perhaps a pay rise or promotion at work.The saying refers to the custom of the Dunmow Flitch which dates back nearly 900 years. Any person kneeling at the church door in the village of Dunmow, Essex, who swore that for a year and a day, he had never had an argument with his wife or wished himself unmarried, could claim an award. It was a flitch (or side) of bacon. But only eight people won it in more than 500 years. 😃
