Clients often ask what are the numbers on the horse. For those who dont know they are brands. There is $4 billion in livestock theft in Australia every year and 5 police assigned to this specific task. If you can identify your animal because it has been lost in a flood, fire or any other incident you have identification via papers found on relevant websites you registered your horse on with the brand. The numbers on one side mean what foal it was born for that year and the number underneath the year they were born (you can also check their teeth for age). On the other side is the property's brand which tells you which property/owner it belongs to.

Like farming horses have many different medical issues to contend with. At the moment summer sores are rife. Why - its been a couple of wet seasons and the adults are plentiful which means the eggs need places to grow. It starts with a hole, the lavae is laid then the egg begins to grow. Unfortunately when its in the leg the leg swells. Dont let it get that far. As soon as you see a round hole pack with a drawing agent Ichthamol then bandage to suck the egg out. It is a foreign body to the horse and will not heal until the foreigner is out. This may need more wraps left for two days or may come out with first wrap. You should see a paper like encasing with a small lavae inside then the swelling will come down in approximately 6 hours. I also hose with a high pressure hose to flush out and reduce swelling or magnets to reduce swelling to get the egg out. You can you fly boots to protect but sometimes these fall down/off thus covering the leg in Filta bac is also good.

Introducing the owner of Ports Horse Farm and my horse Arnie. A quarter horse. This breed was bred originally in America to run in races 1/4 mile long. They have short burst speeds, agility and generally kind natures. Their origin comes for horses names you may recognise Peppi, Doc etc and the American cowboys wanted horses that were no fuss, reliable and agile to help with their herds of cattle. Every lesson I teach involves training the horse as well as the rider as this helps further down your horse riding journey.

WESTERN CUTTING originally came about whereupon there were large acerages with few people to manage cattle and no yards. Earlier days relied on going to the herd of cattle and cutting out the individual cow, steer or bull and then rope the animal to the ground to brand, castrate or simply attend to a large wound.

TIP OF THE DAY Summer sores, bites and skin conditions. Put a thin layer of FILTER-BAC cream on the legs. It COVERS the legs, has antisecptic and resists rain longer than a spray, is economical and when they touch their nose on their legs they cover their nose especially if pink skin.

Prue is an amazing teacher. I highly recommend her if you are beginner, intermediate or professional. My 9 year old daughter was very nervous on a horse and left feeling very comfortable and importantly with a big smile on her face. Beautifully trained horse.
