The value of a Visitor Information Centre cannot be measured by visitor numbers alone. It should be measured by visitor outcomes.

Tourism Tasmania’s latest Visitor Economy data shows the West by North West region welcomed 589,200 visitors who generated more than 2.6 million visitor nights. Every additional night represents increased expenditure across accommodation, hospitality, attractions, retail and transport, delivering significant economic value to regional communities.

It is also the region with one of Tasmania’s strongest Visitor Information Centre networks, with six accredited Yellow ‘i’ Visitor Information Centres and five White ‘i’ Visitor Information Centres providing personalised visitor services across the region.

While many factors influence length of stay, Visitor Information Centres play an important role in helping visitors make the most of their time. Through local knowledge, tailored itinerary planning and trusted recommendations, our teams encourage visitors to explore beyond their original plans, discover lesser known destinations and connect with local businesses and experiences.

The question for our industry is not whether Visitor Information Centres still matter.

The question is whether we are fully recognising the contribution they make to regional dispersal, visitor confidence, local business support and longer visitor stays.

Sometimes, the greatest economic impact begins with a simple conversation across the counter.

What does the Yellow “i” really stand for?

Most travellers recognise it.

Few stop to think about what it represents.

The Yellow “i” is more than a symbol. It is a promise.

A promise that wherever you see it, you will find trusted local knowledge, genuine human connection and accredited visitor information delivered by people who know and love their destination.

In a world where artificial intelligence, search engines and algorithms are transforming how people travel, the role of the Yellow “i” has never been more important.

Technology can recommend the most popular places.

The Yellow “i” helps visitors discover the unforgettable ones.

Technology can generate an itinerary.

The Yellow “i” creates experiences that are personal, authentic and uniquely local.

Technology can answer questions.

The Yellow “i” builds confidence, provides reassurance and supports visitors when plans change, weather turns or they simply need someone who knows.

Every day, Visitor Information Centres connect travellers with local businesses, encourage regional dispersal, support communities and help visitors stay longer, explore further and experience more of what makes Tasmania extraordinary.

As our industry evolves, so do we.

We are embracing innovation and using artificial intelligence to improve how we work, analyse data, create content and better understand visitor needs.

But while the tools we use may change, the values we stand for never will.

We stand for trust.

We stand for quality.

We stand for local knowledge.

We stand for community.

We stand for people.

That is what the Yellow “i” represents.

It is not simply a sign on a building.

It is one of Australia’s most recognised tourism brands and a symbol of confidence for travellers.

Our commitment is to protect that legacy while ensuring it continues to evolve for the next generation of visitors.

The future is not technology or people.

The future is technology empowering people to deliver even better visitor experiences.

The Yellow “i”.

Recognised.

Trusted.

Future ready.
