Carcassonne is more than a dramatic medieval fortress. Its hilltop citadel, known as the Cité de Carcassonne, is surrounded by two defensive walls, 52 towers, narrow lanes, and centuries of history.

The fortified city developed from Roman foundations and became an important stronghold during the Middle Ages. Its walls played a significant role during conflicts involving the Cathars and the powerful rulers of southern France.

A lesser-known detail is that Carcassonne was nearly demolished in the 19th century after falling into poor condition. Architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led an ambitious restoration that helped preserve the citadel, although some of his design choices remain debated.

Walk along the ramparts, explore the Château Comtal, and visit the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus for its beautiful stained glass.

Arrive early or stay into the evening to experience quieter streets. Wear comfortable shoes, as the cobbled lanes and sloping paths can be uneven.
