Walter Leonard MEAKINS was with ‘A Coy’, 32nd Battalion and took part in the ill-fated battle of FROMELLES on 19/20 July 1916. Young Wally MEAKINS recently visited the battlefield and walked the ground where his relative was wounded.

The 32nd advanced to the N of the battlefield (part of 8th Bde) under Major HIGGIN (KIA). The attack went in around 6:00pm (broad daylight) and was immediately met with heavy enemy fire, but the first waves pushed through and captured three lines of the enemy’s trenches under a hail of artillery and machine gun fire by 6:30pm. They found it difficult to consolidate due to the ground - the trench was no more than a slush-filled ditch and difficult to work with.

On their left flank sat DELANGRE FARM (an MG post) from where there now came a withering fire. The Germans knew the area intimately and the Aussies began taking heavy fire from HE shells and shrapnel. The damaged communications tranches prevented badly needed reinforcements and supplies from reaching the men.

The survivors of the 32nd Battalion hung on to their positions until 4:00am 20 July 1916 when the Germans launched a heavy counter attack and rolled up their left flank. All that remained of the Battalion was forced back, and when it retired, the 32nd only numbered some 200 men.

By 4:10am, they were back in their trenches but Walter MEAKINS had been wounded. He would later be killed down on the Somme in November 1916.

It is 109 years since the 'Battle of Fromelles' on 19/20 July 1916 and Australia's horrific introduction to modern industrial warfare on the Western Front. Despite extreme bravery and gallantry in the attack, the battle cost over 5,500 casualties, decimating the newly formed 5th Australian Division.

The 'Cobbers' statue in Australian Memorial Park immortalises the bravery of Sgt Fraser as he wandered No Man's Land looking for wounded men. 'Don't forget me, cobber.' was the pitiful phrase that inspired him to keep searching and bringing men in.
