Birdwatching on Tasmania’s West Coast isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about slowing down long enough to notice the wild around you.

The call of a black cockatoo. A white-bellied sea eagle soaring above Macquarie Harbour. The flash of a pink robin deep in the rainforest. The quiet between wingbeats.

From the wild coastline of Ocean Beach to the rainforest around Montezuma Falls and the raw mountain ranges around Queenstown, birdwatching on the West Coast is unforgettable.

Spot raptors, seabirds and endemic species like the Green Rosella and Yellow-throated Honeyeater.

Best explored slowly, early morning or late afternoon.

📸 We’d love to see what you’ve spotted! Share your bird photos or favourite West Coast birdwatching location in the comments 👇

🌟 Connecting with Industry: Hospitality Tasmania Regional Roadshow

Our West Coast Visitor Information Centre team recently attended the Hospitality Gateway to Growth event hosted by Hospitality Tasmania in Strahan.

This engaging session brought together industry professionals to connect, share ideas and explore opportunities for growth across Tasmania’s hospitality sector. It was a fantastic chance to meet the Hospitality Tasmania Board, connect with their dedicated team, and network with corporate partners and peers from across the region.

Events like these are a valuable reminder of the importance of collaboration and staying connected within our industry with our team also getting updated about what is on offer from operators - all helping to us to provide quality visitor servicing.

Thank you to Hospitality Tasmania for hosting the event 👏

🚶‍♀️Step into the stories of the West Coast — where history lives on in the walls around us.

On the West Coast, heritage isn’t tucked away behind glass — it’s part of everyday life. Buildings, streets, stories and people connect you to a place built on resilience, ingenuity and character.

Did you know the three white (i) Visitor Centres on the West Coast are all housed within heritage-focused properties?

📍Queenstown: Galley Museum is housed within the historic 1897 Imperial Hotel. Over its lifetime, the building has been many things and today, its walls hold the stories of the people who shaped the region.

📍Zeehan: Built in 1903, the West Coast Heritage Centre, Zeehan was once home to the Zeehan School of Mines and Metallurgy. Now, it welcomes visitors into four historic buildings filled with themed exhibitions and one of Australia’s finest mineral collections.

📍Rosebery: The Rosebery Heritage Centre offers beautifully curated heritage displays and rich local history, preserving the stories of this rugged mining town.

🙋‍♀️What’s a white i centre?
Recognised by the blue sign with a white “i”, these centres offer local info, brochures and tips. They can’t book activities—those can be arranged through us (the West Coast Visitor Information Centre), the region’s only accredited yellow-i centre. 👍

Autumn on the West Coast reveals a world most people walk straight past.

Electric blue Pixie’s Parasol hidden beside the track. Bright Fly Agaric rising through the moss. Turkey Tail layered across ancient fallen timber.

🍄Out here, all walks lead to mushrooms. From rainforest gullies near Hogarth Falls to the deep forests surrounding Queenstown and Zeehan, another type of wilderness emerges after rain.

Some grow quietly. Others appear overnight. Some are almost impossible to spot unless you slow down long enough to really look.

That’s the thing about the West Coast. It rewards curiosity.

Take only photos and leave only footprints, these fragile fungi deserve care.

⚠️ DO NOT INGEST — some fungi species found on the West Coast are toxic.

🌿🤝 Working together to strengthen visitor experiences across Tasmania

At the West Coast Visitor Information Centre, we’re proud to be part of the Tasmanian Visitor Information Centre network, working collaboratively to deliver high-quality visitor servicing right across the state. With decades of combined experience in visitor servicing, our team is passionate about sharing knowledge and supporting others in the network to deliver great visitor experiences.

Recently, we had the pleasure of supporting the team from the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden, who have just become a White i Visitor Information Centre, in their visit to the West Coast to build their knowledge and confidence in sharing our region with their visitors.

Our team developed a tailored itinerary, organised accommodation, experiences and visits to operators, and provided insight into visitor servicing. It was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen connections, and support another centre.

Here’s what they had to say about their visit:

💬 “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet the amazing team at the West Coast Visitor Information Centre. Bron and her team organised for us to experience as much as we could in the short time that we had on the West Coast. We can now explain the Visitor Information experience in more detail to our visitors that come to the garden.”

We’re excited to see the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden grow in their role as a Visitor Information Centre and look forward to continuing to support our network partners, including our own fabulous white i centres, the Galley Museum, West Coast Heritage Centre, Zeehan & Rosebery Heritage Centre, with the potential to grow this network in coming years.

If visiting the North West, be sure to allow time for a visit to the stunning Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden 🌸
