We started with a couple of glorious days in 1770 & Agnes Water (following in Cook’s footsteps) and then journeyed via Rocky (my second home or so it feels right now 🤣) and Blackwater (Coal Capital of Qld) to Emerald (home to the largest painting in the world on an easel), through Barcaldine (home to the Tree of Knowledge) to Longreach… the Outback Capital of Qld! It’s been a big few days with a lot more to come 🤠

A couple of weeks ago, I was waiting in Arrivals at Brisbane International Airport for my boys to land… and was feeling quite emotional.

Being the Mum of a Type 1 Diabetic can be scary, and no more so than on New Years Day when you get a call from Los Angeles 🇺🇸 asking ‘should I get him to a medical centre’? Several hours later my eldest was in hospital, then quickly transferred into ICU. The short story is Influenza A which triggered keto acidosis… the words no T1D person (or related person) wants to hear, especially when they are on holiday in the USA! It’s life threatening and it’s scary… escalates quickly and hard to control.

Then began several days of getting up at 1.30am to liaise with my kids, the Doctor’s, the travel insurance, the airline and other travel suppliers as they were originally supposed the fly home the day after he was admitted into hospital. Thankfully, he bounced back as quickly as he went down, and they were cleared to fly home (on day one of the horrific fires in LA which they spent all day watching, thank god they could leave as it was all within sight for them being in Santa Monica)… and even though they’re 24 and 22, they’ll always be ‘my boys’ so having them safely back home has meant EVERYTHING!

Most importantly is that I want to do a MASSIVE shoutout to nib Travel Insurance. As a travel agent for 30+ years, I’ve known the critical importance and value of travel insurance all my adult life but thankfully have never had to make a claim myself (until now). These guys have been absolutely SENSATIONAL… the promptness, care, attention to detail and assistance has been nothing short of extraordinary. One Case Manager throughout, who I felt was up almost 24/7 like me for a while there (and a backup when they were sleeping)… who swiftly took care of everything, responded promptly, pursued whatever was needed and gave me guidance all the way. The claim has been processed quickly and promptly, honestly not only am I blown away but truly grateful for ALL of the assistance they have provided. I highly highly recommend nib and thank them for everything over these past few weeks!

There’s also a few messages here….
✔️ Cherish every moment with your loved ones… they are your everything, and anything can happen at any time!
✔️ Live life to the fullest as you never know what’s around the corner. Everything can change in an instant but don’t let this hold you back… life is for living and experiencing!
✔️ Never EVER travel to the USA without comprehensive travel insurance (No exceptions! If you can’t afford insurance, you can’t afford to go… plain & simple).
✔️ Without a Travel Agent you’re on your own! (An age old slogan in our industry and one still worth remembering)

This was an incredible night raising much needed funds to support those with Type 1 Diabetes. As a T1D Mum myself, to be given the privilege to event manage this event was terrific… check out the DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes, as the work and advocacy they carry out is an important lifeline for those who have! Can’t wait for next year!


Jelly Bean Ball 2024 Highlights!

The 2024 Jelly Bean Ball proved again to be one of Sydney’s most vibrant and invigorating charity balls, hosting nearly 400 generous guests from all walks of life supporting Diabetes.

The DANII Foundation would like to thank & acknowledge each and every Sponsor, Volunteer, Supporter, Guest and Auction Item Donor who contributed so generously to help us raise $330,000 much-needed funds for the Type ONE diabetes Community.

To be asked to event manage the DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes 12th Annual Jellybean Ball last night in Sydney was an absolute privilege. My son Lachie was diagnosed with Type1 Diabetes when he was 12 (hands down the most scary night of my life when I thought I might lose him and he spent several days in ICU), and the support of Donna Meads-Barlow was immense. She welcomed me into her fold and her Foundation (in loving memory of her own daughter Daniella) lobbies and advocates tirelessly to better the lives of people living with T1D. 12 years on and this Foundation is still going from strength to strength and last night’s Ball was incredible… so much support in that room! Congratulations Donna & Brian, and the whole DANII team who were brilliant!
Emcee’d by rugby star, Rod Kafer and with acts such as Brad Blaze - Speed Painter, Artist and Entertainer and the Dan Spillane band (you ALL rock!), it was a very special night!

Beef Australia 2024 has been an incredible experience, it’s been an opportunity of a lifetime to have worked on the events team for this sensational event!

Most importantly, it’s about the people… a small core group of people have worked tirelessly for months (and in some cases years) with an injection of last minute support to bring this juggernaut to life. I’m so proud and humbled to have played my part for almost twelve months making lifelong friendships and connections in the process!

During 5-11 May, Beef2024 hit some records and saw:

* 119,324 movements through the gates
* Over 600 international delegates attend from across 35 countries
* Over 3,800 school children participate in the Suncorp Bank School's Program, with an additional 1,200 students visiting outside of the program.
* 79,000 people tuned in live across the world on Beef TV
* More than 12,500 ticketed meals enjoyed
* Over 1,300 head of cattle judged in Centre Ring, from across 28 breeds
* Over 1,600 head of cattle sold for over $3.9million in the 2024 Nutrien Ag Solutions Commercial Cattle Championship Sale of Champions
* Over 40 Australian political leaders, including the Prime Minister of Australia and the Premier of Queensland descended on Beef2024
* 10 Celebrity Chefs showcase their expertise in the kitchen cooking up meals to audiences
* 35.5tonne of beef served onsite during the week.
