Looking for a different side of Japan for your next journey?

Tucked away in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Gujo Hachiman is one of Japan’s most charming and authentic castle towns. Far from the crowds of the major tourist centres, it offers a rare glimpse into a slower, more traditional way of life that has endured for centuries.

Known as the “Town of Water”, Gujo Hachiman is woven together by crystal-clear waterways fed by mountain springs and the Yoshida River. These canals, originally developed in the 17th century for fire prevention around Gujo Hachiman Castle, remain an integral part of daily life today. Residents still use them to wash vegetables, dishes, and even clothing, creating a fascinating connection between the town’s history and its present-day community.

Strolling through the beautifully preserved streets of the Kitamachi district feels like stepping back into the Edo period. Traditional wooden buildings, narrow lanes, and flowing waterways create a timeless atmosphere that has earned the area recognition as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

For travellers who enjoy discovering hidden gems, experiencing local culture, and exploring places where traditional Japan still thrives, Gujo Hachiman is a destination not to be missed.

Another memorable day at Mt Daisen. We were joined by a young monk, Gokyu, who guided us on a peaceful walk to Daisen Shrine, a symbol of the mountain worship traditions that have shaped this sacred peak for centuries. Surrounded by towering trees and tranquil nature, we listened to his fascinating stories and gained a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance of Mt Daisen.

For lunch, we enjoyed a delicious Shojin Burger, created by Gokyu’s mother as a way of introducing Shojin Ryori, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, to a wider audience in a more approachable form.

The afternoon concluded with a Zen meditation session, offering a rare opportunity to slow down and experience the calm atmosphere of this special place. According to many of our guests, it was one of the highlights of the entire tour.

The Oki Islands were meant to be one of the highlights of this tour, and they did not disappoint. From dramatic coastal landscapes and pristine rural scenery to a slower, more peaceful way of life, the islands offered a glimpse of a Japan that feels untouched by time.

We began at the UNESCO Global Geopark Museum, where we learned about the fascinating geological history and formation of the Oki Islands. We then visited Tamawakasu Shrine, home to a majestic 2,000-year-old cedar tree that continues to watch over the local community on Dōgo Island.

Later, we travelled to Nishinoshima Island to explore the mysterious Takuhi Shrine, dramatically perched on a cliffside, before taking in the breathtaking views from Matengai Cliff, a spectacular 250-metre-high precipice overlooking the Sea of Japan.

Our next destination was Izumo Grand Shrine, one of Japan’s most important and sacred shrines, deeply connected to the nation’s creation myths. Walking through the vast shrine grounds beneath towering pine trees, I could almost feel the presence of the countless generations who have passed down these ancient stories through the centuries.

After enjoying a lunch of Izumo soba, the region’s famous local specialty, we visited a small private museum nearby. Its collection of everyday objects and historical artefacts offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of local people over the years.

We rounded off the day with a delicious yakitori dinner at a local izakaya in Izumo—a perfect way to end another memorable day in the San'in region.

Our San'in adventure continues in the Iwami region, where we explored the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, one of Japan's most important historic mining sites.

We also had the privilege of visiting the studio of a master mask maker, whose handcrafted masks bring the vibrant tradition of Kagura to life. The day concluded with a memorable Kagura performance at a small local shrine, where we shared this centuries-old performing art with members of the local community.

A wonderful day of history, craftsmanship, culture, and warm regional hospitality.

I am with a group on our brand new Culture, Coastline and Spiritual Beauty of San'in Japan Tour. After flying from Tokyo, we spent our first day in a charming town of Tsuwano. The town's main street is lined with a stream with koi fish and irises. So pretty! The best of all, there are hardly any other tourists, so travelling here is so relaxing and enjoyable 😉
