I arrived at Malpensa airport refreshed and ready for action, then took a train to Turin, my favourite Italian city. If I had a week to spend it would be here, soaking up the chilled environment, eating fine food, visiting the museums, hanging out in a few of their historic cafes….

After only six weeks at home I was back on the plane and heading for Milano. I got a big surprise when I checked in - upgrade! I thought she was pulling my leg. The service was great and the caviar was delicious! Very jammy.

The 11th edition of the Trails to Freedom hike finished with a brief ceremony at the Zamboni-Zappa Rifugio, a beautiful mountain hut surrounded by glaciers and soaring peaks on the Swiss-Italian border and a reception at the Macugnaga town hall. 8 days, 96 kilometres, 5000 metres ascent, passing over 5 passes and through 3 valleys - an quite achievement! We are already planning for 2027!

The 2026 edition of the Trails to Freedom hike started 3 days ago led by my friends and colleagues Sarah Morgan, Matteo Negro and Diletta Zanelli. It follows the route of 4 Aussie POWs escaping Fascist Italy. The soldiers survived because of their own resilience but also because of the extraordinary bravery of the local people who helped get them to safety. Trails to Freedom has become a celebration of the bond that has been developed between Australians and Italians and our shared history. The wonderful thing about this year’s edition is that the group is entirely made up of descendants and friends of one of the original four ANZACs, Ron Fitzgerald. .hiking

Don’t know what to get your Dad for Father’s Day? Look no further! Old men love a war book! Trails to Freedom was published last year. It tells the story of an eight day solo hike I did in the Italian Alps in 2013, following in the footsteps of four Aussie POWs escaping Fascist Italy in September 1943. It’s a good read (Pick of the Week for both the Australian and the Sydney Morning Herald) telling the fascinating story of a little known chapter of Australian history. The book can be bought directly from the Hidden Italy website (Shop) or from the usual bookshops and online services.

Is autumn the new spring? Yes, I think it is. There is a lot to be said for travelling to Italy in autumn: the temperatures are milder, it’s less busy, the days are longer and you get the changing colours in the forests. That’s why we have scheduled our new Basilicata guided tour from 5/10 to 17/10/27.
