Each year from 1 May through to the end of the June Long Weekend, specific rules are in place on the Eucumbene and Thredbo rivers to manage the annual spawn run fishery.
Depending on seasonal conditions, these popular Snowy Mountains rivers can provide superlative fishing for trophy-sized brown trout.
📣 Reminder: the 2025 spawn run fishery finishes at midnight on Monday, 9 June, here’s a quick reminder of the rules:
➡ One attended rod and line with up to two hooks with artificial flies or lures is permitted. Gear rigged for bait fishing is prohibited.
➡ Fishers can possess up to three rods and lines rigged with artificial flies/lures only, with only one attended rod in use at any time.
➡ The daily bag limit is one trout with a possession limit of two. A legal length of 50cm applies.
This fishery is largely dependant on rain fall, which increases river flow and encourages fish to swim up from either lake Jindabyne (Thredbo River) or Eucumbene Dam (Eucumbene River) to spawn in the headwaters of these two iconic waterways.
With rain currently extending into the Snowy-Monaro, both rivers will likely see heavy fishing pressure from now until the end of the season.
If you do plan fish the spawn run, please be courteous and respectful to your fellow fishers, pick up your rubbish and follow the rules. DPIRD Fisheries Compliance Officers conduct regular patrols across the entire Snowy Mountains region.
📞 Report any illegal activity to the Fishers Watch Phoneline on 1800 043 536.
The trout season for rivers and streams will close on 9 June and will reopen at the start of the October Long Weekend. Fishing in impoundments (including Jindabyne and Eucumbene) is available year around.
