A barbershop should feel like an experience, not just a service.

Rich timber detailing, deep green joinery, vintage-inspired lighting and floral wallpaper come together to create a space that feels both refined and welcoming.

Framed moments celebrating iconic figures of classic barber culture add a layer of storytelling, while every material has been carefully selected to elevate the client experience.

Textured brick, exposed steel and concrete form the foundation of the space. Custom shelving, mesh-framed mirrors and warm lighting bring warmth and texture, creating an interior that feels both robust and welcoming.

Suspended overhead, a sculptural boat installation formed with timber oars and steel wheels becomes the heart of the space. Inspired by the craftsmanship and heritage of traditional barbering, the installation pays tribute to a profession built on skill, precision and tradition.

At the heart of Wileaway stands the Tree of Knowledge, the defining feature of the store.

More than just shelving, this sculptural installation symbolises curiosity, creativity and exploration. Its illuminated branches stretch across the ceiling, drawing visitors deeper into the space and encouraging them to discover something new.

Like the branches of a tree, every path leads to an unexpected find. Whether it's a thoughtful gift, unique homewares or a hidden treasure. It's a retail experience designed to inspire people to slow down, explore and enjoy the journey.

Exciting to see the future vision for City of Parramatta's Chinatown unveiled 👏

Successful cultural precincts are built through authentic community engagement, strategic placemaking, curated experiences and long-term activation.

It’s great to see ideas that reflect approaches we’ve helped bring to life through Burwood Chinatown and other revitalisation projects across Sydney. We’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful design and activation can transform underutilised spaces into vibrant community destinations that people connect with day and night.

Western Sydney deserves cultural spaces that celebrate identity, experience and community, and we’re excited about the potential of what this could become.

Basalt Studio is always open to collaborating with councils, developers and stakeholders looking to create meaningful cultural destinations.

The Parramatta City Council is planning a new Chinatown in an "under-utilised" part of the Western Sydney CBD, but community members want to see more than just food businesses.

We are incredibly proud to announce that our Creative Director, Anthony Ho, has been awarded Member of the Year, presented by Angus Taylor MP, Leader of the Liberal Party of Australia and Vincent Lim, President of Haymarket Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Lunar New Year installations in Sydney’s Chinatown over the past four years.

From neon lights and immersive public art to community‑centred design moments that have drawn thousands of visitors to Sydney’s cultural precinct during the biggest festival on the Lunar New Year calendar, this recognition celebrates creativity and cultural and community connection.

Thank you to everyone who has supported and celebrated these installations with us. We hope you enjoyed visiting Sydney's Chinatown as much as we enjoyed bringing these experiences to life.

After dark, the Fire Horse on Dixon Street truly came alive during the Lunar New Year festive period✨

Its neon flames burned bright, casting a fiery glow through Sydney Chinatown, lighting up Dixon Street. A blaze of colour, community and celebration we’ll be reminiscing on for a long time. 🐎🔥

The Fire Horse on Dixon has become a powerful focal point for Sydney Chinatown. Standing confidently in the heart of Haymarket, it brings colour, light and energy to the street, welcoming thousands of visitors to the precinct as we celebrate the year of the Horse.

The installation has transformed Dixon Street into a lively public stage for celebration and connection. More than a festive backdrop, the Fire Horse activates the street and underscores the cultural significance of Lunar New Year in Sydney’s civic life.

Thank you again to the City of Sydney for your ongoing support, and to Haymarket HQ and Regiment Workshop for bringing the Fire Horse on Dixon to life.
