Newtown Neighbourhood Centre

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre 🏡 From housing support to community connection, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is here for people doing it tough.

Together, we’re building a fairer, more inclusive Inner West. 💛 Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) aims to build an inclusive, resilient, self-reliant and creative community. The Centre provides community support services to the local community and in particular the disadvantaged groups such as the aged, people with disabilities, people who are homeless, people with mental illness, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people on low incomes.

Can we ask you for something? 💛

Almost every day at Darley Street, someone walks in who needs a hand. Sometimes it’s a form, sometimes it’s a feed, sometimes it’s just a chair and a cuppa and someone who’ll listen. That’s what a neighbourhood centre is. There are 175 of us across NSW, and over 72,000 people come through our doors every single week.

Here’s the bit most people don’t know: the NSW Government doesn’t fund any of us to keep those doors open. We get money to run programs, but nothing for the staff, the rent, the lights. Most other states fixed this years ago. NSW hasn’t.

So our mates at the local community services association (LCSA) have started a petition asking both sides of politics to change that before the next election. Proper, ongoing funding, so centres like ours can stop worrying about the roof and get on with the work.

If this place has ever meant something to you, or to someone you love, we’d be so grateful if you signed. It takes two minutes. Link’s in our bio.

And then, if you can, send it to one person who gets why Newtown needs us. That’s how these things move 🫶

Spring’s barely started and we’re already thinking about October 🎃 Because if you know Newtown, you know what’s coming. The one night a year Darley Street fills up with witches, tiny dinosaurs, questionable face paint and the occasional dad in a bin bag pretending it’s a costume.

Halloween on Darley Street is coming back. Same street, same big hearts, free for everyone.

Details soon. For now, this is your excuse to start planning the outfit 👀

"It's no secret that homelessness has risen in the last 12 months."

Meet Tim, a director and treasurer on the NNC Board. He lives just outside Newtown, joined the board about a year ago, and the reason is simple: he sees what's happening on the streets of the Inner West and wanted to help do something about it.

His job is to make sure the money goes where it should, so more people can get off the streets and into a safe place to live.

We caught up with Tim at An Evening with NNC, our thank-you dinner for the Board, Champions and supporters who keep this place running. We're lucky to have him 💛

Newtown's best-kept secret? The little pink library on Darley St 💗

It's our Street Library 📚 a tiny box packed with free books, sitting right outside 11–13 Darley St. Take one that catches your eye or leave one you've loved.

And it's a proper circular economy project ♻️ Built by our very own Christiane, painted with reclaimed paint from , using materials from , and installed free of charge by the legends at . Nothing new, everything loved.

Been meaning to start that novel? Consider this your sign 👀

R U OK? Day is next Thursday 10 September. But here’s the thing: the conversations that matter most usually don’t happen on the day everyone’s talking about them. They happen on a random Tuesday. Over a cuppa. In the pause after someone says “”yeah, I’m fine.””

That’s what we see at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre every week. Last year alone, 1,112 people came through Chat and Connect. Not because it was a special day, but because someone was there to ask, and then actually listen.

So this week, think about who you’d check in on. The neighbour you haven’t seen in a while. The mate who’s gone quiet. The person who’s always the one asking everyone else. Then ask them. Any day counts 💛

📣 SOMETHING SPECIAL NEXT THURSDAY 📣
Our One Stop Shop is opening its doors from 2–4pm for R U OK? Everyone is welcome!

Big thanks to every service showing up, and to Inner West Council for backing the extra support pathways.

Whatever’s going on, you’re always welcome at 11–13 Darley Street.
