Can we ask you for something? 💛
Almost every day at Darley Street, someone walks in who needs a hand. Sometimes it’s a form, sometimes it’s a feed, sometimes it’s just a chair and a cuppa and someone who’ll listen. That’s what a neighbourhood centre is. There are 175 of us across NSW, and over 72,000 people come through our doors every single week.
Here’s the bit most people don’t know: the NSW Government doesn’t fund any of us to keep those doors open. We get money to run programs, but nothing for the staff, the rent, the lights. Most other states fixed this years ago. NSW hasn’t.
So our mates at the local community services association (LCSA) have started a petition asking both sides of politics to change that before the next election. Proper, ongoing funding, so centres like ours can stop worrying about the roof and get on with the work.
If this place has ever meant something to you, or to someone you love, we’d be so grateful if you signed. It takes two minutes. Link’s in our bio.
And then, if you can, send it to one person who gets why Newtown needs us. That’s how these things move 🫶
