Across the road from a sheer sandstone cliff at Watsons Bay in Sydney, an ordinary suburban home looked out over the Pacific Ocean.

For nearly fifty years, Don Ritchie looked out his front window every morning with a set of binoculars. Whenever he spotted someone standing alone near the edge of The Gap, he did not look away.

He would walk across the grass with his hands open and palms up, giving them a gentle smile. His opening line was always the same: "Is there something I could do to help you?"

If they spoke to him, Ritchie would invite them back across the road to his kitchen table for a warm cup of tea and a quiet breakfast.

Official records credit him with saving at least 160 lives, though his family and local community believe the true number was closer to four hundred. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia, along with letters and Christmas cards from people he had saved decades earlier.

When asked why he kept walking out to the edge day after day, Ritchie simply said that you could not just sit in a chair and watch someone suffer.
