Hope Spots are special places in the ocean that are critical to the health of our planet. Identified by Mission Blue, founded by oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, they protect biodiversity, support marine life and help strengthen ocean resilience through science, education and conservation.

This World Ocean Day, with a focus on Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet, Hope Spots remind us that protecting the ocean starts with protecting the places that matter most. From polar waters to remote coastlines, these areas show what is possible when protection leads the way.

Good food and Antarctica in the same sentence feels unexpected 🍽️

On Antarctic Explorer - A Culinary Quest, enjoy beautifully prepared meals, glacier views outside, penguin chicks nearby, and Zodiac rides past seals on the ice. Long astral summer days and wildlife everywhere, with a flight one way across the Drake to make the journey easier.

If Antarctica is on your list, and you're a foodie, this is a really special way to experience it: https://pulse.ly/2j6s9cdp26

World Environment Day is a reminder that the planet is always sending signals.

In Antarctica, those signals are urgent. Emperor penguins and Antarctic fur seals are now endangered. Around 150 billion tonnes of Antarctic ice are turning into water every year. When sea ice breaks apart too early, penguin chicks are forced into freezing oceans before they can survive. As waters warm, krill move deeper, leaving fur seals struggling to find food.

As explorers of the polar regions, we witness this change firsthand. When sea ice is lost, the foundation of Antarctica’s food web begins to collapse. And what happens here does not stay here. The ocean regulates our climate and produces more than half the oxygen we breathe.

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate action. The planet does not negotiate. The question is how quickly we choose to respond.

You brought such warmth and curiosity to our journey through Orkney, Shetland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland from May 19–29, 2026 aboard the Greg Mortimer.

From the harbor streets of Lerwick to the ancient settlement at Jarlshof, and out to Fair Isle where puffins and seabirds lined the cliffs, each day offered a new perspective on life in the North Atlantic. We were welcomed into small communities, shared stories over tea, and experienced traditions shaped by wind and sea.

In the Faroes and Iceland, the scenery shifted from misty cliffs to glacier lagoons and waterfall-filled valleys, each landing revealing something entirely different. Along the way, we shared wildlife encounters, quiet moments at sea, and the excitement of each new horizon. Thank you for being such wonderful companions.

The landscapes of Ireland and Scotland gave us an unforgettable backdrop from 15th to the 28th of May during our time aboard the Douglas Mawson.

Highlights include admiring the Giant's Causeway, and enjoying peaceful moments in Galway while discovering Kylemore Abbey. Thank you for being part of it.

The stories behind the iconic landscapes of Ireland and Scotland.

This trip is for anyone who likes to understand the places they visit, not just see them. Ireland brings the stories. The famine, the fight for independence, the writers, and the everyday people behind it all, paired with those iconic coastal cities like Di**le and Galway.

Then Scotland shifts the mood. Edinburgh’s old streets, castle views, and hidden underground spaces add a layer of mystery.

It is scenic, but it is the stories that make it stick. If history is your thing, this is the kind of journey you’ll want to be on:

Step into the story behind Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

While exploring the Scottish Isles by small ship, guests heard from Kevin James, Professor of History and Director of the Centre for Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph. His talk, Leaving Scotland: A History, brought the past into focus. He shared what pushed people to leave and what drew them abroad, turning each island into part of a much bigger human story.

This was travel that went beyond the landscape. It revealed the lives connected to it.

Did you know the narwhal is often called the “unicorn of the sea”?

This rare Arctic whale, found in Canada’s northern waters, is famous for its long spiral tusk, which is actually a tooth that can reach up to 3 meters in length. Spotting a narwhal in the wild is incredibly rare, making every encounter feel like something out of a legend.

Narwhals gather in places like Nunavut to feed on Arctic cod and are expert deep divers, plunging over 1,500 meters beneath the surface in search of food. With no dorsal fin, they are perfectly adapted to life under shifting sea ice.

From dark at birth to almost completely white with age, these elusive whales are as mysterious as they are beautiful.

What a richly layered journey we shared on The Luck of the Irish from 08–18 May 2026 aboard the Douglas Mawson.

From the towering Slieve League Cliffs rising above the Atlantic, to music filled evenings, and the lively streets of Galway, every moment carried its own story. Along the way, we traced centuries of history through castles and coastal villages, followed the echoes of emigration from Cobh, and found ourselves immersed in landscapes shaped by wind, sea, and time.

Our time in Bantry Bay brought extra joy, especially when guests experienced the warmth of Whiddy Island life, sharing stories and laughter with the island’s much loved local host over a well earned drink. Thank you for joining us.
