Why we love April - The Maldives

Although the Maldives are north of the equator (just), all the swell action has its origins in the Southern Hemisphere. We love April in Maldives because its autumn South of the equator, but it’s a time of good weather and light winds across the archipelago.

April offers a combination of early season SW groundswells from below South Africa, South swells from Indian Ocean Lows and SE swells from trade winds and cyclones West of Australia and South of Indonesia. When you have light and variable winds it means that almost every break and every Atoll in the Maldives can pump, sometimes all at the same time!

Some of the best spots to be are:

Southern Atolls on a charter or Ayada Resort
Central Atolls (Maverick Laamu, Niyama, Six Senses Laamu or a charter boat)
Male Atolls (Kandooma, Como Cocoa, Kuda Vilingili)

There is always a sneaky early SW groundswell that appears as the wet season starts to ease, but its not quite dry season so winds are often light.

In East Indo this combo is much appreciated as the many quality breaks can fire up without the limitations of steady trade winds. Both the lefts and the rights of Sumbawa, Sumba and Rote come in to play and surfers who put themselves on the spot can spread out and score all-day without having to focus on the breaks that handle trade winds.

There is a crew of surfers who have worked it out, they know the best boats, the right timing and the most legendary surf guides who will ensure they are on the spot to score. These are the regulars, the surfers come back every year – and they are already getting their 2026 trips locked in – and the Gurahali is the boat of choice!

The Gurahali has charters available in Maldives Southern Atolls during March – April and again during September – October. This is when the swells are pulsing and winds are light offshore or light with glassy surf conditions.

The Central Atolls is where you want a charter are from May to September, the westerly winds blow offshore all day at the East facing breaks. Escape the crowds and explore the Maldives Outer Atolls on dates that work best for you and your crew. Book now to get your choice of schedule and boats – before the regulars do!

The Gurahali is the perfect mid sized boat, ideal for 10 -12 surfers and even some non surfing partners.
