40 days on the road, taking in new experiences while keeping work flowing, gathering fresh perspective and stories, all feeding into what’s next for DBD.

A journey full of movement, connection, and creative energy. From sharing in a close friend’s wedding in the mountains of Ecuador, to soaking up live music and late nights in LA, and then to a once-in-a-lifetime cricket tour through the Caribbean with my Dad, these weren’t just moments, they were memories I’ll carry forever. It reminded me how much creativity lives in real experience, and how travel feeds the work in unexpected ways.

There were meaningful conversations, creative sparks, and a few exciting opportunities that might just turn into something more for DBD.

Now back, with a full camera roll, a fuller mind, and a few notes scribbled down that just might become the next creative chapter.

I’ll be sharing more from each stop over the next few weeks, from the people and places to the design, culture, and stories behind them.

A short animation I had made for the DBD website. A simple way to bring the DBD brand to life and show a bit of what I do.

Design that’s strategic, not just pretty. Creative with a purpose behind it. Whether I’m working from a desk in Sydney or a café in South America, the goal’s the same: Clear, considered design that helps brands connect.

Check it out on the site if you're curious...

Design is everywhere, especially when you’re not looking for it.

Spotted this sign for a street food spot in Santa Marta, hand-painted, full of character, and way more considered than you'd expect. The type, the layout, the balance… it all works. And it’s probably been there for years.

You can tell when someone cared, even just a little and that care carries.

It’s moments like this that remind me why I love what I do.

Design isn’t always polished or perfect, but when it’s done with intention, you feel it

Pretty pictures are everywhere.
But design that moves people? That takes clarity and context.
That’s what we build at DBD, brand communication that connects.

Dan Buchan Design is about finding the right style for every story, not sticking to one. What makes us different is how we approach projects. Every brand, every client, every idea starts with strategy.

But strategy is more than just a "plan", it’s about understanding a brand’s personality, values, and the story it wants to tell. That’s how we create work that feels authentic and connects with the right people.

We don’t jump straight to aesthetics or trends. We ask the right questions, guide the thinking, and work closely with clients to bring their ideas to life in a way that truly reflects who they are and aligns with their goals and audience.

We’re collaborative, real, and focused on long-term value. Because without strategy, it’s hard to create anything meaningful. That’s how we work.

If design isn’t helping your business communicate, move faster, or grow, it’s not doing enough.
At DBD, we build creative that fits into your workflow, not the other way around.
Simple, strategic, and actually useful.

Week one in Colombia and it’s already taken me through a mix of moods, places, and pace.

Started in Bogotá. Full-on. No warm-up. The city’s loud, intense, a bit chaotic... but in a way that feels alive. Every corner’s a contrast. Wealth and struggle side by side. Old meets new. Beauty in the in-between. Nothing feels overly planned or considered. Yet somehow it fits together like a puzzle. An odd puzzle. And somehow it all works.

I met up with an old mate I used to live with in Sydney, now based here. It was a grounding connection. Familiar energy in a completely new setting.

Now I’m in Santa Marta and everything shifts. Slower pace. Sticky heat. Music in the streets. People gathering and lingering outside. Talking, laughing, just taking their time. There’s an easy energy here. Open. Warm. A little hazy around the edges.

Design wise and life wise, this contrast is a gift. Fast then slow. Intense then open. It’s shaping the way I see things already.

If you saw the recent Dockside moodboards and picked Moodboard 2 you were spot on.

Working with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and Tiny Fish Events DBD developed the brand identity for Dockside Festival a three day celebration of sport culture and community in the heart of Port Adelaide.

The Port is a place where what you see is what you get stoic historic and full of character. We created a visual identity that reflects that spirit gritty but bold simple but adaptable. Designed around the iconic Lighthouse and Diamond Square the true heart of the festival.

If you haven’t seen it, the new DBD website is now live.

For years I ran Dan Buchan Design on the side while working full-time. It was something I kept building slowly, client by client, always with the goal of going out on my own. Two years ago the timing finally lined up and I’ve been running DBD full-time ever since.

The new site gives a proper look at how I work. Strategy first, always. It’s not just about how things look, it’s about helping brands communicate more clearly and confidently through thoughtful, considered design.

If that sounds like something you’re interested in, feel free to take a look: danbuchandesign.com or comment “website” below and I’ll send you the link directly.

One of the biggest perks of running my own creative business is the freedom to work from anywhere.
Over the next 6 weeks, I’ll be designing from Colombia, Ecuador, the Caribbean, Miami, and LA. Laptop packed. Briefs in the inbox. Ideas getting sharper with every new stop. I’ll be working in a limited capacity but still very much on; thinking, creating, and delivering along the way.

Travel doesn’t take me away from the work. It adds to it. Different cultures, fresh perspectives, unexpected conversations. That’s the stuff that fuels creative thinking.

I’ve always found the best ideas come when you’re a little uncomfortable. Somewhere new. Thinking differently. Seeing things from another angle. That’s the plan.

DBD is still open. Still delivering. Just with more sun, more colour, and more clarity behind the work.

If you’ve got a project coming up and need clear, strategic creative, I’ll be working (and caffeinating... and hydrating) my way through it all. Get in touch.
