Mums & daughters volunteering together

Connection • Empathy • Impact

It started because the kids loved drumming on their pencil cases.

Ines saw the opportunity.

Buckets. A few rhythms. A lot of practice.

She learnt the routine, worked alongside two teachers and brought students from different classes together to create Parikrma’s very own drumming group.

The song? “Dai Dai” by Shakira

What started with pencil cases and a few buckets became music, teamwork, confidence and so much joy.

Sometimes the best ideas start by simply following the children’s lead.

The support for the Akka Project continued at our local pub, where our community came together for an incredible night of music, connection and pure joy.

Hosted by Mamas & Co Choir at Woolwhich Pier Hotel, the night brought people together through a shared love of music, with all proceeds this year going to the Akka Project.

The incredible Jenny Nylund, Freya and the band had the whole pub singing. What started with a few little “doo doo doo” notes quickly grew into a room full of people singing together, with Run to Paradise by Choirboys bringing the house alive.

Watching this powerhouse mum and daughter duo turn a room of people who were simply mingling and chatting into a full-blown choir was pretty special.

Music has such a powerful way of bringing people together, and that is at the heart of the Akka Project too. Different ages, different backgrounds, different lives, but a shared love of connection, community and joy.

A huge thank you to Mamas & Co Choir, Jenny, Freya, the band and everyone at Woolwich Pub for getting behind Akka and creating such a special night.

Meanwhile, back in Australia, our team enjoyed an incredible evening with two events that showcased our community here at home, backing the magic of the Akka Project.

The night kicked off with our team collecting a generous grant and award Jerome Laxale MP through the Bennelong Volunteer Grants.

We walked away buzzing with excitement, not just for the recognition, but even more so for the opportunity to connect with and meet some of the amazing volunteer organisations in our local area.

Seeing so many people generously give their time to do good in our community, and having a local MP who shines a light on that work, makes us so proud to be part of this electorate.

Throwback to one of our wonderful story lessons whilst at Parikrma!

Last month, one of our amazing teams led a beautiful lesson based on the book Josephine Wants to Dance by Jackie French

As part of the lesson, the children learnt about some of Australia's unique native animals. To make the story even more memorable, our very own "Josephine" made a special appearance, dressed up and ready to dance.

After sharing the story together, the children put on pink tutus and had the chance to learn some ballet moves, dance around the room, and let their imaginations shine. It was such a joyful experience, filled with laughter, confidence, creativity, and plenty of twirls!

A huge thank you to our team for creating such a fun and engaging learning experience for the children.

Check out our next post to see how it all came together!

Wondering what an Akka Project trip is really like?

This is it.

A classroom full of smiles, families learning side by side, and a mum and her teenage daughter sharing their lesson on The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Every activity is designed to be interactive, educational and fun for both our volunteers and the communities we work alongside.

These are the moments you'll be part of: learning, connecting, and making memories that last long after the trip ends.

One of the goals we set ourselves this year was to help create Joy Corners in every classroom.

A Joy Corner is a dedicated space for play. It can be used when a child needs a moment to regulate, as a reward to work towards after completing classroom expectations, or simply as a place where children can connect through play during lunch. For many students, especially those who don’t have opportunities for play elsewhere at school, these spaces become incredibly important.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to create sensory boxes for every classroom, along with construction resources including LEGO and magnetic building toys.

But for us, donating resources is only part of the story.

We also spent time with the teachers, exploring each resource together, discussing how it could be used, and sharing practical strategies for implementing Joy Corners to support every student, especially those needing extra support with emotional regulation.

We believe the greatest impact comes when we go full circle. We source the resources, provide professional learning, and work alongside teachers to set classrooms up for success. Because real change happens when great resources are matched with confidence, knowledge and support.
