Here is a quick run down on Ayres Rock Resort if you are thinking of visiting Uluru.
There are multiple accommodation styles to choose from. Starting from the campground, Outback Lodge which is shared hostel-style accommodation, The Lost Camel Hotel (rooms don't have windows), Outback Hotel, which is where I stayed, Desert Gardens Hotel and Sails in the Desert. For families, they also have the Emu Walk Apartments.
The Outback Hotel was fabulous. It is their mid-range property. Room was comfortable and spacious, nice pool area, good bar with live music most nights, good selection at the breakfast buffet, food at the kiosk was of high quality and varied. I was talking to some people who were staying at Sails in the Desert (this is the 5* upmarket accommodation) and they said the food at the kiosk at Outback Hotel was much better than at Sails. I didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't comment on this.
Ayres Rock Resort is basically one big circle, and they offer a free shuttle bus service taking you to all the various shopping, sightseeing and accommodation places in the resort. At first glance, it seems like everything is so spread out. In the middle there is a large plot of land, basically dirt with some shrubbery. It has a slight mound in the middle so you cant see to the other side which adds to the impression that nothing is within walking distance. In fact, you can go from The Outback Hotel, walk across this dirt section, take a scenic stop at a lookout point and get to the shops all within an easy 15-20min. It is much closer than you think.
There is an IGA, a few food outlets/restaurants and souvenir shops.
They also have a whole heap of free activities. I was there for 3 nights and did not have enough time to do all the free things that I would have liked.
Honestly, with a combination of sightseeing tours, or, if you have your own car, driving around to see all that makes up Uluru and surrounds then add the free activities, you can easily fill in 5nights here.
Best time to go to avoid the heat is Spring/Autumn. Winter is also good but the nights get very cold so rug up if you are doing any early morning or night activities. In summer, you will experience extreme heat, so this time is not recommended unless you love 40degree plus days on a regular basis.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and would definately recommend going.
