The single most common upload mistake we see is one enormous merged PDF.

ImmiAccount is built to take evidence by category. When everything arrives as one file, the officer has to hunt for what they need, and hunting is how a document gets treated as missing when it was there the whole time.

→ Split by category. Identity, relationship, financial, health, character each get their own upload.

→ Name the file so it says what it is before anyone opens it. Date, document type, person.

It costs you twenty minutes and it changes how your file reads on the other side of the desk.

If you studied regionally, there may be a nomination stream built specifically for graduates like you, and it is one of the least advertised parts of the skilled program.

These streams are designed by states to keep the graduates they educated. The criteria come from the state, which means they can differ sharply from what the Commonwealth requires and can change on the state's own timetable.

→ Where you studied can matter as much as what you studied. That gate belongs to the state, not to the visa criteria.

→ Program years open and close. A stream that was shut when you last looked may not be shut now.

If you are a regional graduate and nobody has ever mentioned this to you, that is worth a look.

A timing point that quietly costs families a lot of money.

Government application charges are set by date. What you pay is decided by the day you lodge, not by the day you started getting your documents together, and not by the day you first spoke to someone about it.

→ A file that is nearly ready across a change date is the most expensive kind of file there is.

→ Family applications feel it hardest, because every additional applicant is charged off the same base.

This is not a reason to rush a weak application. It is a reason to know the date and plan against it deliberately.

Changing course is not a small administrative decision. It touches your current visa conditions and every option that comes after it.

Five questions worth answering before you sign anything.

→ Question four is the one nobody asks. Who is advising you on this transfer, and how are they paid? The answer used to be the college. That changed.

→ Question five is the one that hurts later. Every extra semester is time on the clock, and some pathways have an age tested at the end of it.

There are good reasons to transfer. There are also transfers that quietly close a door the student did not know was open. Know which one you are making.

Something every person who has ever engaged a migration agent should know, and most do not.

Your file belongs to you. Your documents belong to you. A disagreement about fees is a separate matter and is dealt with separately. It is not a reason for anyone to hold your passport copies, your certificates or your application history.

→ You are entitled to your documents. Ask in writing and keep the request.

→ Keep your own copy of everything from day one, including anything lodged in your name. You should never be dependent on someone else's filing cabinet.

If you are in this position right now, there is a complaints process and it is free to use. You are not stuck.

If you qualified as a nurse outside Australia, the most useful thing you can do this week is find out which stream you fall into. Everything downstream depends on it, and most people work it out far too late.

The stream is determined by where and how you qualified. It is not a preference, and paying for the wrong pathway first is an expensive way to find that out.

→ Registration to practise and a skills assessment for migration are two separate processes with two separate bodies. You will likely need both.

→ The self-assessment step at the start exists precisely so you do not spend money in the wrong direction. Use it.

This community is one of the largest in Australian migration and one of the worst served by generic advice. Start with the stream.

What is the one question nobody has given you a straight answer to?

Not the one you found ten different answers to online. The one you have asked an agent, a college, a friend who went through it, and still walked away unsure.

Put it below. I will answer as many as I can in general terms this week, and the ones that keep coming up I will make a proper post about.

I will not give individual advice in the comments. That needs your full circumstances in front of me. But I can tell you how the rule actually works, and that is usually the part people are missing.

A request for more information is not a refusal. Read that again, because most people who receive one assume the worst and lose two days to panic they did not need to spend.

It means the case officer needs something before they can decide. It is a formal request with a deadline attached, and the deadline is the part that matters most.

→ Read the deadline before you read the request. Everything else is planned backwards from that date.

→ Answer exactly what was asked. Extra material does not strengthen a response and can raise questions nobody asked.

The response is where the file is won or lost. Treat it like the application, not like an email.

You paid for it, you waited months for it, and it has a shelf life.

A skills assessment is valid for a limited period. Applications get built around one that quietly expired while the applicant was gathering everything else.

→ Diarise the expiry the day the outcome letter arrives. Not later.

→ Plan your lodgement backwards from that date, not forwards from today.

It is the most avoidable delay in the entire skilled program.

Three skilled visas, constantly confused, and the difference decides your next three years.

One needs nobody's support. One needs a state to nominate you. One is regional and provisional, with a permanent stage at the end of it rather than at the start.

→ Permanent from day one, or permanent later after a period of holding up your end of an arrangement. That is the real trade.

→ The occupation lists behind each are not identical. An occupation that works for one may not work for another.

Save this one if you are still deciding which door you are walking through.
