After days at sea, it was exciting to sight land and approach the coast. With the fragrant scents of the island drifting our way, we knew that something exciting and special awaited us: landfall in Tonga! In Nuku'alofa, we encountered some squally weather, followed by beautiful tropical skies and so much fresh tropical produce to enhance our meals. Time now to go exploring...

⛵ Wind Shift is on the move in the South Pacific! 🌊

The crew has left Opua, New Zealand, and is currently on passage to sunny Tonga. But first, a very special pit stop: the remote and beautiful Minerva Reefs (Ongo Teleki). 📍

Sitting roughly 800 miles north of New Zealand and 300 miles southwest of Tonga, these two submerged atolls are a sailor's oasis. After battling some big seas leaving NZ, the anticipation on board is high! The reefs will provide excellent shelter from the ocean swell, giving everyone a well-deserved break.

It won't just be rest and relaxation, though. While anchored at the reef, the crew will be:
🔬 Continuing our important plastics research
🏊‍♂️ Swimming and snorkeling with turtles, giant clams, and reef sharks
🦪 Walking the unique reef at low tide

After a few days of recharging and researching in this South Pacific paradise, Wind Shift will pull up anchor and make the final leg to Tonga.

One island group becomes the next.
One passage leads to another

You depart Tonga as crew. Somewhere along the way—through night watches, sail changes, shared meals, and landfalls—you become part of the story.

Samoa is just one chapter.
Beyond it lie new reefs, new anchorages, and the next horizon toward Fiji and deeper into the South Pacific.

This isn’t about ticking destinations off a list.
It’s about experiencing the progression of an ocean voyage properly—following the trade winds, living aboard, and seeing the Pacific unfold mile by mile.

Many crew join for one leg.
Some decide they don’t want the journey to end.

Tonga → Samoa → Fiji
Join a single leg—or continue the adventure.

After days offshore, Samoa hits differently.
The anchor drops. The water turns clear turquoise. Fresh fish onshore, warm trade winds, reef breaks in the distance, and the feeling that you’ve actually travelled somewhere—not just visited it.
This is the reward for crossing an ocean under sail.

You’ve seen the route.

Now imagine the moment you’re in it.

Three days offshore. Your turn on watch. The boat moving steadily through the South Pacific. No land, no noise—just the sound of water and a sky full of stars.

This is where it shifts from a trip to an experience.

You’re not watching it—you’re part of it.
Standing watch. Holding course. Crossing an ocean.

Tonga → Samoa. 15 days. ~400 nautical miles.
Last remaining berths.
