Last week Greeter Veronica caught up with Aldara, Vanessa and Alex from Spain. After meeting in Potts Point they walked to Woolloomooloo and the Art Gallery of NSW where they admired the aboriginal art collection at the Yiribana gallery and explored their souvenir shop. Enjoying the sunny day, they continued the walk to the Botanic Gardens, the Opera House and Martin Place. Before saying goodbye at the Queen Victoria Building, they stopped in at the Nut Shop in the Strand Arcade for some delicious dark chocolate macadamias. 😋

Lydia met Ivan from Malaysia at Sydney Town Hall recently and the pair headed to Hyde Park where they were just in time for 11 am Service of Remembrance at the Anzac Memorial. From there it was on to Paddington to take a look at the interesting 19th century workers cottages, Victorian terraces and the wonderful architecture of the public buildings and spaces, including the repurposed Reservoir Gardens. They weaved their way from William Street to Five Ways where they stopped for lunch at one of the coffee shops. A pleasant stroll back to Hyde Park through quirky Surry Hills contrasted the ‘vibe’ of the two suburbs.

After a rainy period in Sydney, Bev was happy the sun was shining for her greet with Anna and family from New Zealand who were here for the biennale art exhibitions and the Vivid light shows. They visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum on the campus of the University of Sydney surrounded by imposing sandstone heritage buildings such as The Great Hall. The Museum showcases an eclectic collection of antiquities, coins and natural history archives and art exhibits. Bev found it a pleasure to walk and talk with our Kiwi visitors while viewing the biennale art exhibits and the interesting ideas and conversations around them. Coffee at the terrace cafe chatting about Sydney sights and hidden gems was a lovely finish to the afternoon.

Heidi and her husband John from Queensland, plus her father John from Mollymook, met Karen at Circular Quay. From there they had a quick visit to the Opera House, dropped by Government House, said hello to “Trim” (the statue of Matthew Flinders’ cat) outside the Mitchell Library and had a tour of the lower house chamber of Parliament House. For good luck they patted the, now very shiny, nose of Il Porcellino the boar outside Sydney Hospital, admired St James Church, then wandered through the Strand Arcade. After so much walking, a rest was required and Karen introduced them to “Laneway Dumplings” where the group had lunch. What a lovely time they shared!

The sunshine made a welcome midweek return when Susanne from Brisbane met with greeter Mark to do a walk around the Harbour’s north shore. A short ferry ride across to Milsons Point was followed by a stroll around Lavender Bay past Luna Park, the Comic Walk and up to Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden. They continued on through Kirribilli, stopping for a coffee at the scenic Flying Bear, checking out the iconic Kirribilli and Admiralty Houses and walking along the foreshore where they encountered the now seemingly obligatory wedding taking place. A walk back across the Bridge followed by lunch at the Fortune of War pub completed a most enjoyable outing.

Our new volunteer Veronica tells of her recent greet: “My first solo Greeting experience was fantastic! My guests, a french family, were really in love with Sydney and we got along very well. It was their first time on a ferry which was perfect because it didn’t rain heavily and the water was calm. On our way to Manly, there were lots of questions from the children, especially about the sharks that live in the harbour. They enjoyed the walk to Shelly Beach and we had the opportunity to see a very talented surfer enjoying the waves! On our return to the city, Vivid had started so arriving in Circular Quay was magic and a perfect way to close a lovely afternoon.”

Holly met her guests Sheelagh and Heather from Auckland at Customs House. They decided to grab a coffee at the fabulous La Renaissance cafe to start and then take a wander to Observatory Hill for its views and then Foundation Park for its interesting historic houses footprint. As the guests had a more formal tour of the area organised for later in the week they decided to walk over the Harbour Bridge and down to Milsons Point ferry wharf to get up close to the bridge for photos. Fortunately the sun came out just in time to the delight of all three. Later they caught a train to Town Hall and parted ways at the Queen Victoria building with the guests excited to continue with more sightseeing and lots of enthusiasm for the rest of their stay.

Sydney Greeter Rose and her husband and son are currently travelling in Europe. They were delighted to meet up with a fellow greeter from Konstanz in Germany where the weather was wonderful and they discovered Lake Konstanz and the medieval history of the city. To top it off, their greeter Thomas is in a rock band and invited the travellers to the cavern where he plays!! How wonderful to experience stunning Konstanz with a local.

After weather scuttled their original plans, Greeter Sally met Ron and Carol from the USA for a wander. They admired the childrens playgrounds, especially the climbing frames, around Darling Harbour. The Goods Line led them to the Chau Chak Wing building, which they circumnavigated. At Kensington Street, it was time for coffee, before meandering past the old Mortuary Station through Chippendale to Sydney University. Dodging new grads taking photos, they admired the beautiful Quadrangle. Broadway Food Court provided an opportunity to people-watch while eating a light lunch. Rain prevented exploration of Glebe, so they parted, with the travellers hoping for a fine evening for Vivid and a seafood meal.
