CAN OUR BIKES SURVIVE THE SIMPSON DESERT?

Before attempting a completely unsupported double crossing of the Simpson Desert, we needed to find out whether our bikes were really up to the challenge.

So we took four bikes into the sand for two tough days of testing.

Deep sand, plenty of crashes and a serious workout for both the bikes and ourselves!

Some bikes handled it better than others, and we learned plenty about what would need to change before taking on the real crossing.

THE SMILES SAY IT ALL!

🏁 DAY 12: CHALA TO AREQUIPA 🇵🇪

THAT’S A WRAP!

Our final and longest riding day covered approximately 400 kilometres from Chala to Arequipa.

We followed Peru’s spectacular Pacific Coast through rugged cliffs, enormous sand dunes and otherworldly desert landscapes before climbing back into the mountains.

The final ascent delivered one last challenge as we rode through thick cloud with visibility dropping to around 10 to 15 metres. Everyone worked together and arrived safely in Arequipa, completing an unforgettable Peru motorcycle adventure.

What a journey it has been!

We explored Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Chivay, Lake Titicaca, the Uros Floating Islands, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu, Chalhuanca, the Nazca Lines and Peru’s incredible Pacific Coast.

We celebrated with a farewell dinner at 13 Monjas and shared stories from an adventure we will never forget.

A massive thank you to every single customer who joined us. You were easygoing, supportive and such a fantastic group of people. We started as riders from different places and finished as friends for life.

This is exactly why we love running motorcycle tours. We visit extraordinary places, but the wonderful people we meet make the adventures truly special.

✈️🏍️ DAY 11: NASCA TO CHALA 🇵🇪

Today began with a bucket-list scenic flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines. Seeing these enormous ancient geoglyphs from the air was absolutely mind-blowing. How were they created, and what was their purpose?

We then rode 180 kilometres along the Pan-American Highway through Peru’s coastal desert. Powerful crosswinds and waves of sand blowing across the road made it a challenging adventure.

Along the way, we visited the Sacaco Museum and discovered ancient marine fossils in what is now one of the driest deserts on Earth.

We finished the day in Chala with fresh seafood beside the Pacific Ocean and motel over looking the ocean.

Day four brought the Aussie Bike OR Hike Sydney to Melbourne ride to an end, and it was an absolutely epic day to finish off the tour, exploring some of the best parts of the Victorian country and an afternoon of endless dirt.

The morning started in Bright, inundated with motorcycles, surrounded by a swarm of Husqvarnas. Perfect weather followed us through the countryside, stopping at various coffee stops along the way because, of course, we are on adventure bikes, before ending up at Mansfield for lunch.

The afternoon was filled with dirt valleys and mountains following the Goulburn River and the little historic towns that plot along it before finally dropping down the southern side of the Victorian high country to end up east of Melbourne, wrapping up an absolutely brilliant tour which considering was the inaugural trip, judging by the reception of the riders, this will no doubt become yet another tradition.

Already looking forward to next year, but in the meantime, Sydney to Gold Coast is in late February into March 2026, and there are a few remaining spots left if you’re keen to join!

Day one of Sydney to the Gold Coast…I mean Sydney to Melbourne! That’s right, Alex Cudlin is taking the Aussie Bike OR Hike tour south this time, for four days, finding the dirtiest way south to Melbourne via some of the best parts of Victoria's high country.

The day kicked off a bit of rain, headed over the mountains, first stop for coffee at the The Lolly Bug - Little Hartley, then turned south and headed through spectacular views.

The weather remained mixed throughout the day, and the mist provided a stunning backdrop for photos. A lot of new riders in the mix, all of whom did a fantastic job today with a consistent and reasonable pace.

While I’m mentioning Sydney to the Gold Coast, a few tickets are remaining for the event early next year. If you’re keen to get on that ride, make sure you book a ticket before it runs out.

I've been riding ADV Bikes since 2019, I'm certainly no expert and I'm always keen to learn new things.

Last weekend I joined the Aussie Bike OR Hike team on their Kickstarter ADV 2 day course and tour and I learnt so much all over again!

If you've never done a tuition course or tour, this is the one to get started on. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to learn.

I'm loving this community more and more, I highly recommend you give this a go, it's not only a great way to learn new skills but meet more amazing riders in the process.
