Out doing a bit of a bird watching recce today ahead of a tour later this week and in short the highlight at one of our locations was 2 Burkes parrots, 2 chestnut breasted quail thrush and 2 mulga parrots and 1/2 dozen of the fatest budgerigars I have ever seen. The two chestnut breasted quail thrush were the highlight though. Western shore line of Lake Bindigolly tomorrow.

Great day today although the weather was closing in a bit on the back of a 2 day forecast of light rain. Have a couple of tours booked for next week so decided to make a couple of “house” calls and check on the availability of some locals to make an appearance. Happy to say that the Halls Babblers were out and about and very accommodating today. Just a bit annoyed that I had no camera as they were out and on full display for the short time I was with them. Took my leave as some apostle birds arrived and they were all arguing amongst themselves so I left. I hadn’t gone 200 metres and I became the attention of a wonderful family of Splendid fairy wrens. Not to be outdone a red cap Robin and partner dropped in for a quick look at the attraction before flitting off down the small creek I was in. A Singing Honey eater and an Inland Thorn-bill completed the neighbourhood door knock. I was well pleased with the 1/2 hour I was there.

Good evening ‘birders. A quick update on the opening of this years outback bird watching activities.
Our return to Thargomindah to open the Season was once again influenced by a ‘normal’ weather event that delivered beneficial rains to the far south west. That weather, and the price of fuel resulted in some tour cancellations and a change of booking dates for others. However despite the delays we opened with the first tour a fortnight ago . We had great weather for the 2 day tour and a great number of species were observed and recorded.
I completed another tour yesterday and once again the birdlife in the Bulloo Shire is regenerating after last years event.
Our most recent guests expressed a desire to view the local blue bonnets, Burkes Parrots, mulga parrots, and pink cockatoos. There was a couple of ‘no shows’ but we were delighted to view, and photograph 2x chestnut breasted quail thrushs. These guys are known to us and their particular habit of following the local chestnut crowned babblers along the mulga corridors where old water courses existed. It appears the location we’re have discovered lies within their range which is very pleasing. We also viewed a couple of chirruping wedgebills. Our guest was also thrilled to view and photograph an Australasian Crake. But the highlight of the tour was the viewing of a Painted Honey eater. They are migratory within Australia but they are never the less a very welcome addition to our viewing pleasure. This bird was no doubt a very ‘early’ arrival with the bulk of Painted Honey eaters arriving in the next few weeks.
We do have a number of tours that have not been booked so now is the time to book into are birding experience.

Evening all. Well finally we launched our 2026 season after a number of stops and starts with the weather and the price of fuel. However in the midst of the bad news we have successfully booked a number of 2 day tours for the year. Our first tour took place last weekend with two magnificent autumn days of birding. A total of 62 species were recorded on day one with 58 species on the second. While there were a couple of double up sightings reported, our guests racked up 12 ‘lifers’ over the course of the two days.
Lynette and I have also been out and about visiting new locations and revisiting old habitats to reconnect with our special feathered friends. We have been successful in sighting some new additions to the ‘must see’ list. We are looking forward to taking our guests on yet more amazing and life changing sightings in the coming months.
