📜 Sydney: From Humble Beginnings to Global Superstar.

July 20, 1842, marked a pivotal moment in Sydney's history with the Sydney City Incorporation Act, transforming it from a small town to a thriving city. Discover the remarkable evolution of Sydney, from its early days as a penal colony to its current status as a vibrant metropolis.

✨️✨️ Once a dark colony, Sydney became the first city outside Europe with gas-lit streets -165 lamps glowing through the night, many outside the local pub (to keep those "riotous hordes" in check 😅)

AGL's journey began here. The first gas streetlight was lit on 24 May 1841, coinciding with Queen Victoria's 22nd birthday.

From safer streets to late-night shopping, this was more than light - it was transformation.

We had the opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal of 'Illume' by the incredible Bangarra Dance Theatre and what a performance!! Such powerful storytelling, movement and culture on stage - absolutely breathtaking. Thank you, Bangarra, for the experience! Don't miss this incredible performance. 🔥

Initially, a dirt track used by the Cadigal clan of the Eora Nation for thousands of years, the first European road was laid along here in 1788 and named Spring Row, then High St.

In 1810, it was officially renamed George St by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in honour of King George III.

Over time, many changes have occurred to Sydney's oldest and most significant street.

The ocean was a reminder of the long and dangerous voyage that separated them from home. Also, in the 1800s, people believed it was wrong to be seen with little clothing in public. Therefore, it was illegal to swim at Sydney beaches during the day.
