Tin Can Bay might just be home to one of the quirkiest wildlife experiences youโ€™ll ever see.

Watch thousands of small crabs march in perfect formation, disappear in seconds and pop back up like living Easter eggs on legs. Itโ€™s the kind of natural wonder you have to see to believe.

10 Fun Facts about Soldier Crabs:

1. Soldier crabs have an internal clock that perfectly syncs them with the falling and rising of the tide. When the tide is up, they bury themselves, but when the tide falls, they come out of the sand to eat on the exposed sandy mud flats. Their internal clock is so well tuned that they will perform this behaviour even if you take them away from the ocean and put them in a bucket of sand in a darkened room.

2. They are one of the only crabs that can walk straight forward, instead of sideways.

3. They are known as soldier crabs because they all "march" together across the sandy mud flat. Their large numbers are thought to help protect them from predators.

4. When approached, they bury themselves into the sand using a cork screw motion, until they are completely covered.

5. Because of their bright colours, they are often known as "Easter Eggs on legs". They are one of the only animals in the world with purple knees.

6. They have adapted to life on land by breathing through their bum. They suck up water into their gills via a fringe of tiny hair like structures found at the back edge of their shell. To recharge the water, they squat in puddles to allow them to continue breathing.

7. They hang around in same s*x groups. Large groups of males and large groups of females can often be found wandering around separately. No one knows why.

8. They are fakers. Their bright blue colour is a common signal in the animal world that tells potential predators that they are poisonous. However, they are not. This trickery is known as "mimicry" in the natural world.

9. They don't like cold weather. When the temperature drops, the number of soldier crabs seen wandering on the flats reduces.

10. They are the cleaners of the sandy mudflats. They scoop up sand into their mouth and suck off the bacteria and other organic matter and spit the newly cleaned sand back out.
