Following the closure of West Oz Active, Hwee and Geoff have opened the next chapter in their lives.

We welcome you to join us on our page Vicarious Reality and live vicariously through our reality as we explore the world in our 6-wheeled drive Land Rover Defender, aka Lizzy, with our reactive rescue dog 🐢, Nala.

We have made the difficult decision to close down the business. Geoff, Hwee and their guides would like to thank all of our clients who have joined us on some amazing adventures over the years.

It has been our absolute pleasure to show you all the magnificence of Karijini and we apologise that we cannot continue to do so.

West Oz Active would like to extend a big thankyou to the Pilbara community for taking us in and making us part of the Pilbara life, and in particular we would like to thank the Banjima people whose country we operated on.

We would like to share a video of some of the great memories we've had together ❀

It is with deepest sorrow that Geoff and Hwee would like to notify their family, friends and clients that they have had to close the 2020 season due to the combined pressures of soaring insurance costs and the lack of clients from COVID-19. As you know, Geoff and Hwee prioritise client and staff safety above all things and that is the primary reason for taking this decision.

We deeply apologise to all for any inconvenience. We would like to thank everybody for their understanding, especially our extremely supportive 2020 guides who this action has hurt 😒

This action we believe will allow us to come back bigger and better in 2021!βœ¨πŸŽ‰

P.S. πŸ˜‰ Geoff and Hwee are now looking for work to tie us over so if anyone hears of anything, let us know!πŸ™

The team that were in WA spent a few days with the maestro of ropes πŸ§—β€β™‚οΈ, Brett Huntly from Outdoor Discoveries. Two of the team spent their time quizzing him with his 20+ years of experience, the other two spent their time practicing to pass their practical roping guide qual. Congratulations to Andrew (Snooky) & Hwee (Ma) for passing! πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘

Another reminder that Karijini is a remote location! So please carry suitable emergency response kits, tell someone what you're doing and where you're going. It is also a reminder that both the Western Australia Police Force and our Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia Rangers are super humans and they don't even wear capes!

Police said the woman was saved because she took one important precaution.

It’s not often we take up our social media space with confronting articles but we spend a lot of time at WOA reading what went wrong for others. The White Island tragedy is in the early part of the analysis of β€œwhat went wrong” but many things can be learnt from the early lessons. We shared with some of our closest advisors the article on the importance of audits (which we have every year, this year’s will be conducted by Austere Risk Management) and the sharing of Emergency Response Plans which again we do. We have a comprehensive training package for our guides and only employ trained and national accredited guides. Let’s be honest here (you are our friends, family and clients so honesty and trust is what you want from us right?) we spend almost $1500.00 on Epipens and if you’re interested almost $7000.00 in first aid supplies all in the hope we never have to use them and believe it or not most of this only lasts 1 year.

This article here has a quote in it β€œWith this system, the company that takes the 'safety first' approach will lose out to its less safety-conscience competitors. It's clearly ridiculous." Whilst Australia is different to New Zealand there are those who take safety less seriously than us. We have in fact had to assist and rescue clients of some other operators and this has happened at least once every season we have owned WOA. So when people ask, is there cheaper tours or other options? There always is, but we operate always with safety in mind and a recognition of the tyranny of distance should something go wrong. So we want to assure all of you β€œit’s clearly ridiculous” however we take it seriously and choose safety over profit. Have a great and safe new year!

When his daughter died, he thought her legacy would be an end to tourist deaths in NZ. He's devastated to be wrong.
