Here are some fun facts about why golf in Tasmania is so incredibly good! ποΈ
π World-Class Rankings
Tasmania has five golf courses ranked among the top 100 greatest in the world, which is remarkable for a relatively small island state. According to Golf Australia's 2022 course rankings, Tasmania holds three of the top four spots in the entire country.
ποΈ The Oldest Course in Australia
Homesick Scots carved out Australia's first golf course through farmland in Bothwell back in the 1830s β it may even have been the first golf course built outside of Scotland. Today, Ratho Farm still has six restored holes where the fairways are famously trimmed by sheep.
π A Links Revolution
Tasmania's golf transformation kicked off dramatically in 2004 when Barnbougle Dunes opened near Bridport on the northeast coast, designed by Tom Doak and Mike Clayton. It immediately challenged the notion that genuine seaside links golf only existed in Scotland and Ireland. Top 100 Golf Courses
π¨ The Cleanest Air on Earth
Due to its position in the Southern Ocean, Tasmania has some of the cleanest air in the world β meaning this is golf in its most refreshing form.
π Epic Holes You Won't Find Anywhere Else
At the Tasman Club near Port Arthur, there's a par-3 eighth hole where your tee shot must reach a tiny green on the far side of a deep chasm, with vertical sea cliffs plummeting down to surging ocean swells below β no point looking for lost balls there!
ποΈ Open to Everyone
Unlike many elite golf destinations, all of Tasmania's world-class courses β including Barnbougle Dunes and Cape Wickham, both rated in the world's top 100 β are open to the public to play.

A Farmer's Crazy Idea
Barnbougle Dunes came about when Bridport farmer Richard Sattler built the course on a sandy coastal patch of his 5,200-hectare farm that was simply too poor for farming, but seemed like a decent spot for golf. It turned out to be a pretty good call. Bunkered
π§ Post-Round Perks
King Island β home to Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes β is renowned for its farmland produce, particularly its cheeses, cream, and milk, which are sought after by award-winning restaurants from Hong Kong to Paris. Not a bad way to finish a round.
